Hello. I am usually to be found on the PA forum since I have ling suspected that I have a B12 deficiency. Unfortunately none of the standard tests I have had done for PA have been able to definitively diagnose any B12 problem. I gather that this is quite common. I am therefore trying to check out other possible causes of my symptoms, and thyroid problems have been suggested as a good place to start. My symptoms are: brain fog, balance problems, fatigue, pain in left chest, some peripheral neuropathy, muscle weakness. Some of these symptoms seem to have improved after taking B12 supplements, but a nagging doubt remains that it might also be thyroid related.
Do these symptoms suggest a thyroid problem to any of you knowledgeable people? If so can you suggest which tests I might carry out?
I have low Vit D, high folate (after supplementing), normal ferritin and (now) very high B12 after months if injections.
Many thanks!

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested. Also extremely important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12
Low vitamin levels are extremely common, especially if Thyroid antibodies are raised
All thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and fasting. This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip, best not mentioned to GP or phlebotomist)
Private tests are available. Thousands on here forced to do this as NHS often refuses to test FT3 or antibodies
Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have special offers, Medichecks usually have offers on Thursdays, Blue Horizon its more random
If antibodies are high this is Hashimoto's, (also known by medics here in UK more commonly as autoimmune thyroid disease).
About 90% of all hypothyroidism in Uk is due to Hashimoto's. Low vitamins are especially common with Hashimoto's. Food intolerances are very common too, especially gluten. So it's important to get TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested at least once .
Hello SlowDragon. Many thanks for that. I am currently in Moscow and intend to have the thyroid tests done here tomorrow privately. The only tests available from the private clinic are: FT4, TSH and TPO. Will these still give an indication of any thyroid problem? On H Pylori: yes indeed, I had it and was treated with antibiotics. I should be re-tested in January so not sure at all that it is gone - I suspect not. Are you saying that H Pylori can cause thyroid problems?
fascinating… though it has left me a little confused. I had a endoscopy a few weeks ago and the gastro doctor here told me I had 'erosion' of the stomach caused by HIGH acid. She put me on a 2-month course of PPIs to reduce the acid - I am still on this course. At the same time I had an H pylori infection... So not quite sure what is going one. But I will have these 3 tests tomorrow anyway and we sill see if they point to anything. Thanks again for your help!
