Kefir Diary Update: How Probiotics need Prebiotics in unison for maximum efficiency & benefit to the gut biome...message from Chris Kresser

This landed in my inbox and indeed reminded me of Dr Michael Mosley's advice with regard to Probiotics. In one of his excellent TV programmes he mentioned how Prebiotics can be thought of as the "manure" to help Probiotics flourish in the gut.

In fact he experimented with taking Probiotic powders before bed, due to being an insomniac, and he found they helped him to sleep better. He was very impressed.

This is what the equally excellent Chris Kresser explains!

"Last week I saw a patient, Xavier, who came to see me for a number of different conditions, including eczema, prediabetes, depression, and anxiety.

As we reviewed his stool test results, I pointed out that he had very low levels of beneficial gut bacteria. Xavier replied:

“I don’t understand how that’s possible! I’ve been taking probiotics for years.”

I understand his frustration and confusion. Until recently, scientists believed that taking probiotics was the best way to increase the levels of healthy gut bacteria.

However, recent research has shown that while probiotics have numerous benefits, they don’t quantitatively increase beneficial gut microbes over the long term.

If probiotics don’t do this, what does?

Fiber.

When we eat protein, carbohydrates, and fats, enzymes in our gut break down these larger molecules into smaller molecules that we can absorb. But that doesn’t happen with fiber. Instead, it passes through our stomach and small intestine completely intact before entering the colon, where it becomes “food” for the beneficial microorganisms that live there.

And unless you’ve been living in a cave for the past 20 years, you know how critical those gut microbes are to your overall health!

Unlike probiotics, studies have shown that fiber does increase the levels of beneficial bacteria in the gut. (Fiber is also referred to as a “prebiotic,” which is defined as a nutrient that is not digestible by humans but that increases the growth of beneficial gut bacteria.)

So, if you have low levels of beneficial bacteria, don’t forget to include fiber/prebiotics in your strategy, along with probiotics.

They support each other: the probiotics are the beneficial bacteria themselves, and the prebiotics are the food these bacteria need to thrive.

I hope this helps clear things up for anyone who, like Xavier, has been confused about the different roles of probiotics and fiber/prebiotics in supporting a healthy microbiome.

In health,

Chris

P.S. On a different topic, make sure to check out my recent article on the connection between poor thyroid function and high cholesterol. This is a little-known, but common cause of high cholesterol, and most doctors are not aware of it."

Personally I find Chris Kresser who was also featured in the Broken Brain Docu-series, very centred, who has very pertinent advice to offer.😉

Ha! :D

I was going to write about the exact same!

For the past 3 days I have begun taking inulin in the morning and before I go to bed (in my valerian tea) to feed the little good guys in my gut. It's funny stuff, slightly sweet, so can be used in juices or smoothies or just a glass of water, also baking etc. It is sort of water soluble (in warmish water) otherwise it ends up in a congealed lump........but it's not unpleasant!

This is the one I got:

hollandandbarrett.com/shop/...

I may go for the one from Bulk Powders as I regularly order from them anyway and it is a little cheaper because they don't use fancy printed packaging.

One word though. Wind. Some people can get a bit of flatulance on it. Thankfully not affected (big sigh of relief from OH, Sponge and little Dizzy Cat!). If you get wind back off on the recommended dose and build up over a few weeks.

Have to say I have had the most blissful sleep the past couple of nights. This is also a supposed "feature" of inulin as pondered by Dr Michael Mosley:

bimuno.com/prebiotics-and-s...

Apparently good for gut motility and relief of constipation.

More info:

webmd.com/vitamins-suppleme...

All interesting stuff! :)

I seem to remember some advice about people with AI problems avoiding inulin but cant remember the detail - can anyone else throw any light on thos?

spongecat in reply to Valerie0106

I've had a quick Google for pubmed on inulin use as a prebiotic and any problems arising for people with Crohn's or other IBD's and two studies here seem to throw a positive light on its use..........

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...

Unless I've gone searching for the wrong answer to your question it seems that this fibre is helpful in reducing lesions in the intestinal tract especially if the gut is repopulated with "good" bacteria for a healthy flora.

That's all I can find for now :/

It's in loads of foods as well............. I think the inulin I have is made from chicory but here's the complete list:

Ground chicory root (the most common source of inulin due to its extremely high concentration)

Dandelion root

Asparagus

Leeks and onions

Bananas and plantains (especially when they’re slightly green)

Sprouted wheat (such as the kind used in Ezekiel bread)

Garlic

Artichokes

Fresh herbs

Yams

Burdock root

Camas root

Coneflower, also called echinacea

Jicama

Yacon root

It's everywhere! :D

You are welcome!

To be honest the notion of prebiotics is all a bit new to me.

Poppy_the_cat in reply to spongecat

Well I should have picked up on it before as I had watched Dr Michael Mosley discuss their benefit on one of his excellent programmes...but with everything going on and feeling like the bear of little brain I have not paid it close enough attention. I will do now!

Thank you.

Prebiotics are new to me also and am still learning. My understanding is that the PRObiotics don't work well without the PREbiotics to feed off of.Not sure I got this right. Any info welcome. irina1975

in reply to spongecat

Thanks spongecat. I copied your list. Good info. The only bread I buy is Ezekiel Low Sodium. I try to go gluten-free but do sneak in little bits here and there. I believe there is a little in Ezekiel but I don't feel bad if I eat it. It's the only bread product I use. My favorite breakfast is mashed avocado with chopped garlic, onion, fresh lemon juice, pepper and a quick dash of sea salt on ezekiel toast. Thanks for the list. Fortunately we have lots of avocados. It is my main fat source. irina1975

Some probiotics contain prebiotics.

in reply to Baobabs

Really? Which ones.? Sort of 'two for one".

I obtain mine from a hospital pharmacy in Saudi Arabia but until recently they have been available via Amazon. They currently appear to be out of stock. I gather the make is well regarded and I have no complaints. It is called Protexin Balance, manufactured by Probiotics International Limited. The website is protexin.com

It is a UK company.

in reply to Baobabs

Thank you, Baobabs. Amplanning on ordering my supplies soon and am leaning toward the water kefir from coconut. But may give a goat's milk kind a try. I'd like to stay off dairy.

Hello Night Owl, as one to another, I agree entirely. He is very genuine and very dedicated. Another Dr who came very ill himself and had to sort himself out to get better. He had problems with mould in his home unbeknown to him and it made him and his family very ill. He is excellent.

Take Care,

Poppy 😉

That is excellent. I too try to eat as many as I can 😄

in reply to Poppy_the_cat

I love it. And when I go to the doc and can't eat first because of labwork I usually take an avocado, a small penknife and a spoon to eat after. For my morning "guacamole" I get everything ready the night before. The minced garlic, squeezed lemon juice, chopped onion and seasonings. Mix in a small salad bowl and in the fridge, Then in the morn all I have to do is cut the avocado, scoop into my bowl and mash. Adding in am keeps it from turning brown. I can manage that early! Oh, and pop in my piece of toast (Ezekiel breadlow sodium).. I bumble around the kitchen early in the morning so it's best to keep things simple. I have a small plastic avocado masher that I would grab in case of fire. LOL x (the night owl)
