Selenium - supplement or Brazil nit's?

Hi All,

After a self inflicted severe hypo episode I feel its time I gave my thyroid some TLC. I'm really keen to try selenium and wondering if taking a couple of Brazil nuts wld be just as good as a supplement please? Also is there any advice about best time if day to take please? 😀

fluffyhat Brazil nuts have to be grown in certain areas of certain countries to have any selenium content, so if the packet doesn't say "Grown in selenium rich soil" then it's safe to say they contain none and a supplement is better. Central Brazil and Eastern Amazon give the highest amounts of selenium honey-guide.com/2012/11/19/...

Thank you so much for that info . Very interesting and informative reading indeed. incredible how the amounts vary from country to country, with some having barely any selenium at all. I had been thinking it would be healthier to use nuts as more natural . But after reading that I think personally I would want to take a guaranteed dose - otherwise impossible to be able to assess effiacy. Are all selenium supplements the same, could anyone suggest a good brand please?

Selenium L-selenomethionine is recommended as it's an organic form and more absorbable than inorganic forms. Another organic form is the yeast bound selenium.

Inorganic forms are selenate and selenite but much less of these forms are absorbed.

Some brands of selenium have an unpleasant odour.

Personally I have no problem with the yeast bound type and I use Cytoplan which is a small tablet and virtually odourless.

The usual dose is 200mcg daily.

Hi fluffyhat, I JUST started taking Selenium for my hypo as I have read that it does help. So, it is too soon to know the result. However, I do take it in the morning so as to not risk it affecting my sleep at night. Good luck with it, and let's keep in touch on the affect it may or may not have!

Hii I have just had my minerals and vitamins tested and my selenium is good. I eat 2 brazil nuts per day and have done for over 30 years. It depends where they are grown I always buy organic ones.

Hi Bunny Jean, yes it's a good point to get good quality organic ones..which ties in with seasidesusies reply about the varying amounts depending on the quality of the soil theyvare grown in. Im looking forward to trying selenium.

I buy SO Brazil's and the packet states high in Selenium per 30gsm serving provides 1360/0 NRV

I eat them as a snack mid morning, you can chew on them for ages
