Pulsating Very Loud Tinnitus in Left Ear. Anyone experience this?

Hi Everyone,

I've had tinnitus in both ears since 1999. I've been feeling really grotty the last 2 weeks, (well worse than normal) I've had wall to wall double vision, very bad nausea, weakness, absolutely no energy, dizzy/faint, worse than usual insomnia, and now this pulsating very loud white noise tinnitus in my left ear. I think my cortisol low level maybe getting worse.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks. XX

Have you been checked for Ménière's disease.

in reply toMia1057

Hi thanks for your reply, yes I've been checked. i've had balance problems for years and more recently vertigo, both improved with levo. I've had all the tests under an ENT, i have a weaker side on the left re balance tests, but after some physio i decided it was all to do with being hypo . i have moderate hearing loss in that ear too.

I am also hypo with Hashimotos but I also have Ménière's bilaterally. There are a number of papers which suggest a link see below. It is pretty awful to have vertigo etc as well as the other symptoms of hypothyroidism.

Hi Mia1057, i'm really sorry you have Meniere's, it must be so unpleasant. i will have a good read of your link, thanks for putting it on.

Could be B12 as well?

I do have problems with absorbing B12 for many years now. I do supplement but find it hard to get my numbers up. I'll do some more reading, thanks!

Here is a good place to start if you haven't already been there:

Also have a read of the forum, type in the search box a symptom, i.e. tinnitus, and lots of threads will come up!

Hi yes i have this too and my balance and vertigo has increased dramatically in past two years i was diagnosed woth hsahimotos anitbodies in october 2012 and now hypo diagnosis 6 weeks ago. hoping that levo will help all of this imporve as the dose gets better.

Hi, i did find my balance problems and vertigo did improve a lot on Levo. It's not nice being diagnosed with hypo and it can take a lot of juggling meds and doses before you improve. When my thyroxine was really low i was falling in the street and down stairs, got car sick too. I did find this improved when i got up to 175mcg of Levo. Good luck!

My tinnitus disappeared after 6 months of keeping me awake at night, when I bought antibiotic eyedrops for my sore eyes, and it seemed to trickle through to the Eustacian tube and clear a blockage.

Maybe worth trying?

Wow, that's amazing! I'm so pleased for you. I've had it since 1999 and it does drive you crazy. I can hear mine over a loud tv, it never leaves me. I'll definitely try your remedy, thank you. X

My tinnitus got 10 times worse when I found out I had a underactive thyroid. It was only when I got to 100mcg of Thyroxine a day a few years later it finally disappeared. It was my worse symptom as the more tired I got the louder it got.

Hi Super1, i'm so glad you got rid of your tinnitus, it really is a curse. I've been up to 200mcg of levo, and currently i'm on 175mcg levo and 3 grains of Armour and 2 years down the line it hasn't changed only got louder :-( i think i'm stuck with it. It's horrible walking around with your head full of noise.

Hi Helcaster,

Sorry for the late reply but among my numerous research I knew I had some info regarding tinnitus and have only just found it I hope this is of some help, but please forgive if it has come too late or is irrelevant now. Hope your feeling ok today.

Thyroid problems, or temporary abnormalities (such as occur in pregnant women or people with anemia) can increase blood flow through the jugular vein, which passes near the auditory nerve, causing the pulse. Treatment is for thyroid conditions.

What causes pulsatile tinnitus?

Pulsatile tinnitus is due to a change in blood flow in the vessels near the ear or to a change in awareness of that blood flow. The involved vessels include the large arteries and veins in the neck and base of the skull and smaller ones in the ear itself. The blood flow can be altered by a variety of factors:

Generalised increased blood flow

Blood that is flowing quickly generates more noise than blood that is flowing slowly. Increased blood flow throughout the body can occur in strenuous exercise or pregnancy. It can also occur in severe anaemia or when the thyroid gland is over active, a condition known as hyperthyroidism or thyrotoxicosis.

Hi Flatfeet, great links thank you. I think it's either anaemia or low cortisol. My bloods make me look overmedicated but don't have any symptoms and still lower than normal body temps.

It's still going on and so loud, i think i'll have to see the GP to be honest, but tinnitus is hard to deal with. It's always much worse when i'm stressed. Knowing i have low cortisol and those awful blood test results has put my stress levels in orbit! Xx
