Diarrhoea every afternoon

Just asking advice. Does anyone else have diarrhoea every afternoon no matter what they have eaten? It’s been going on for months now and feel like it’s ruining my life. It’s always about half an hour ish after I’ve eaten and it’s explosive and foul stenching. I have tried all sorts. Even Imodium won’t stop it. Just at my wits end with it really.

You could take a look at the link below regarding Bile Acid Malabsorption (BAM) although I would have thought if it was BAM that you would have it more often than just the afternoon but worth a look incase fits the bill.

Is there something you are eating (or drinking) that you only have at that time of day that could be causing this?!

Thank you for your reply Maureen1958 - my doc thought it could be so sent me off to see a gastro specialist and they ruled out bile acid malabsorption but it is super weird as it’s always in the afternoon - always.

Are you eating fatty foods at lunchtime, perhaps it could be something like that or if lunch your biggest meal of the day!

Also as Meleber suggested it could also be overflow diarrhoea, see link below to a good description of this.

Hi Deedee. How did they rule out BAM? Did you have tests.?Iwas lucky enough to be prescribed Colesevelam while waiting to see a Gastro. They have worked brilliantly but they wont let me stay on them indefinately. I am dreading having the Sechat scan as if I dont meet the criteria like Maureen they will stop prescribing which I think is really mean as they work for me.

deedee3333 in reply to bellamar

I wrote a reply but it disappeared- I had the sechat scan to rule it out. Fingers crossed the sechat scan comes back with the result you want do you can stay on the medication- wishing you all the best.

Perhaps overflow diarrhea due to partial constipation because of impacted faecal material in your (left or right side) colon? pockets of gas in your intestines as a result of dysbiosis caused by the sticky faecal material?

deedee3333 in reply to Meleber

Thank you for your post Meleber. Might have to look into this as a possibility as it’s just taking it’s toll now.

Out of interest do you get other symptoms at specific times in the day as well? Not just stomach pain or diarrhea but other things like Fatigue , drowsiness , headaches or sudden changes between hot and cold.

Can you think of anything that happened in the month before your IBS started that was different, unusual or shook you up like a life change or infection?

It might help to get some answers for you.

deedee3333 profile image
deedee3333 in reply to Blearyeyed

Thank you for your post Blearyeyed - I’ve had nothing really change in my diet - but could it be possible to just suddenly become intolerant to meat or chicken? I do get headaches after eating rice pounding heart rate and then super fatigue.

Red meat always set me off, it took me a while to accept that. I mostly stick to fish and ‘friendly’ veg. Could even be something much earlier in the day sets it off. My daughter always had wheetabix for breakfast and dreadful diarrhoea every evening, it took a while to find the link.

I hope you find the cause, it will be life changing for you

Thank you for your post and sorry to hear red meat is your trigger. If chicken is my trigger I’m going to be devastated as it’s my go to meat. Take care

Anything going on that time of day that might, say, be stressful? Weekdays same as weekends?

Hello winfong and thank you for your post. I am at home most days and it’s the same every day - it’s just so bizarre why it’s every afternoon.

Hi, To rule out Bile Malabsorption did you have the scan where you drink a solution ….test is one appointment followed by another two weeks later. This is the only true way of diagnosing/eliminating. A Dr cannot determine otherwise.

deedee3333 in reply to Confused01

Hello Confused01 thank you for your post. I had the sechat scan and that’s how it was ruled out.

Confused01 profile image
Confused01 in reply to deedee3333

Good to hear . Are they doing or done an endoscopy , both ends and food intolerance tests. Probably be good for you to do a diary of what and when you eating and when the diarrhoea starts/ends. Good luck.

deedee3333 in reply to Confused01

I had a colonoscopy at the beginning of the year and didn’t find anything serious - just mild inflammation in my descending colon. I’m slightly leaning more towards food intolerance as I could be something that I’m eating regularly but it’s taking the next day for it to appear as the diarrhoea. Just really baffled. Thank you for your time

If you eat meat, try an elimination diet like the carnivore diet, this solved my ibs and many others.

Hello and thank you for your post. I will have a look at that diet - just seems like it’s happening whatever I am eating. All the best.

Hi deedee3333 This must be hard for you. I have never had the test for BAM, but I do not have a gallbladder. My GP prescribed me cholestyramine and this really helps me I don't think I could do without it . I only take one sachet a day and on bad days will take an Imodium. I think you will find that you can take cholestyramine long term and that it helps with IBSd. I wish I had been proscribed this med before my gallbladder op. There is a good book you can read Take Control Of Your IBS by Professor Peter Whorwell, available to buy on Amazon. Take care Pollyboo

Thank you pollyboo for your post. Sorry to hear that you have had to struggle before they gave you cholestrymine but I’m glad it is working for you. I will definitely look for that book on Amazon and thank you for the recommendation.

I have the same but mine is first thing in the morning usually within 15mins of getting up and that’s it until the next day and all tests come back clear

Any idea what causes yours? Just absolutely frustrating as I know I need to be near a toilet around early afternoon- but I’ve actually been caught short a few times and it’s so embarrassing and upsetting

Have you been tested for Giardia? I know that can cause horrible smelling, explosive diarrhoea. I dealt with that in my 20’s. I just thought it was me at the time but finally went to my dr, stool test and then some pretty rough meds, but it stopped finally. But that seems to be what really set off my IBS. I wish you luck and good that everything else has come back negative.

deedee3333 profile image
deedee3333 in reply to WhosClues

Hello WhosClues and thank you for your post. I’ve never been tested for Giardia so it might be something I need to enquire about. It’s just really getting me to that it’s every afternoon. Take care

Don’t lose heart Deedee, I had diarrhoea for 24 yrs until I came across Sodium Butyrate. This supplement really helps me. I did a food diary and found out that too much sugar and alcohol and lectin (found in apples and tomatoes for example) will upset me but little bits of all these are fine just not in the same few hours x

Have you been tested for coeliac disease?

deedee3333 in reply to roobiedoobie

Hello roobiedoobie - they have done the blood test and said it’s not celiac. Just so frustrating.

ConfusedRabbits profile image

Hello there, it could be a food intolerance and sometimes it wouldn't even show up in a test. It can be cumulative so also difficult to gauge. You really don't want to stay on the meds for long due to the side effects that you may not even be aware of. I'd suggest you consult a nutritional therapist. I've worked with clients who have been written off as suffering from functional bowel disorder and got them sorted in a very short time. Good luck!

Thank you so much for your post ConfusedRabbits - will have to check out whether there are any nutritional therapists near me.

Your description sounds like your body is deperately trying to get rid of something. It could be an infection. Ask your doctor, and get some stool testing may be an initial idea? Or it could be a violent food reaction, like an intolerance. Are you lactose, gluten, sugar, or anything-else intolerant do you think? But I am suspecting an infection personally. Don't take my word for it. Ask the doc.

deedee3333 profile image
deedee3333 in reply to Luisa22

Thank you for your post - I have been trying to pin point foods that might be causing it but it’s strange as I eat chicken on an afternoon- diarrhoea soon after and then if I eat a chicken dinner on the night time - nothing. So strange.

Luisa22 profile image
Luisa22

That is strange! Maybe to do with the time of day? Do you 'go' when you get up in the morning, or is the first bm in the afternoon?

It could possibly be something you ate the evening before?

Since I got IBS, I have also had to really plain cook everything. For instance anything cooked in oils or fats would be a no no for me, and I would have to bake with a little water and just salt, or steam or simmer everything. But weirdly I can eat butter and sometimes avocado.

So if you roast chicken with skin on maybe that's too much fat for you...I don't know.

It's hard to do the detective work to find out if something upsets us. And with IBS, often it isn't easy to trace. I know I can eat one thing one day and be just fine, but if I eat the same thing another day...whoops!

I think IBS must be something the devil invented. So many tricks up its sleeve!

deedee3333 profile image
deedee3333 in reply to Luisa22

I agree with you that ibs must be something the devil invented! Definitely. It is my first bm of the day but maybe if I think about it it could be to do with oil. I have a non dairy spread with the chicken I have on the afternoon so maybe that might be a culprit. It’s so hard trying to figure it out.

Luisa22 profile image
Luisa22

Yes, some oils don't suit me. I had some frozen Tesco's chips with no other additives except sunflower oil, at my friend's house, and that seemed fine for me! I am usually ok with butter, but don't get along with coconut oil or olive oil which I always used to. I can't work out -why butter, and not cooking oils or margarines? It is difficult to work it all out, I agree. It's like we have to become super food-detectives all of a sudden.

deedee3333 profile image
deedee3333 in reply to Luisa22

It’s just really hard to fathom out isn’t it? I’m starting to wonder whether chicken might be my culprit as I do tend to eat a fair amount. Ooooh it’s so frustrating at times. Really is.

Luisa22 profile image
Luisa22

I wonder if it's the way the chicken is cooked rather than the chicken itself? The plainest way to cook chicken is to oven bake it either wrapped in tinfoil or in a dish with a little water and covered with tinfoil or a lid and just sprinkled with a little salt, no other seasoning. It might seem a bit insipid done that way but easier on the gut? Chicken skin which is so tasty roasted, I know, can be a bit too fatty too.

Have you tried fish? I find the frozen fish fillets baked the same way work for me and never upset my gut. All of them seem fine; Cod, Haddock, Hake, Coley etc.
