what foods to avoid for gas

i have ibs-c and get so much gas. so much of the time i feel awful and now really afraid to eat. when my best friend died a half a year ago i really started with bad stomach problems. worrying about the virus and isolation has made it worse. before i just had chronic constipation from medications and then a heavy reliance on laxatives. i am bipolar and have pts so always have a lot of anxiety.

Stop drinking alcohol and fizzy drinks and replace with at least 2 litres of water per day. Do not eat peanuts or sweetcorn, Brussel sprouts or baked beans. Make sure you walk briskly for one mile each day, and, when eating, chew each SMALL mouthful of food really well before swallowing. Good luck and stay safe

thank you. i am disabled from a stroke so i hardly walk. i stopped carbonated beverages and don't drink alcohol. i just started eating peanuts but don't eat the other foods. i will try to drink more water

I must confess, since making water my 'main' drink (after years of coffee & soda) its done my body wonders. Weirdly tea is fine (I drink quite alot of weak to medium Tetley). Hope youre ok

Sorry to hear you've been struggling. Have you tried any probiotics such as Alflorex which has been scientifically studied for IBS or Symprove? Since being on Alflorex I have been able to tolerate more foods which means I have been less gassy. It is available on a free 2 month trial on joining theibsnetwork.org. You could also try probiotic yoghurts. If that doesn't work there are also types of carbohydrates found in common foods called FODMAPs to consider, which aren't digested very well in some people.

I am on Linaclotide for IBS-C and alongside the Alflorex it has reduced the pain I am in considerably so that I am now able to consume the extra fibre I need for a BM.

that prescription laxative didn't work for me and another prescription laxative. nothing happened at first when i took two bottles of magnesium citrate. i was terrified that i was going to have to have an operation.it used to work great. i had a couple of oranges and kiwi and more water and a couple of suppositories and nothing happened. i was up most of the night worrying and listening to josh groban. i took a suppository this morning and went. i was so relieved. yesterday on amazon i ordered some different laxatives. i have a lot of probiotics.thank you so much.

Hi, agree with FRreedman, drink lots of water - don’t gulp it, just sip because gulping results in swallowing air. My technique is to breathe out, then sip and swallow. That has really helped to reduce swallowing air - the same is true for tea (decaf) and all other drinks. Also agree the foods but add broccoli, asparagus and cabbage as veg to avoid. What you are trying to avoid are something known as indigestible sugars. These are known as FODMAPs. These tend to sit in the gut for long periods of time and whilst they are there provide food for bacteria which subsequently causes trapped wind. I’m afraid that reduces your veg intake but it is honestly worth it - there are plenty of other vegetables. Eat smaller meals - maybe have three or 4 smaller meals during the day and avoid any eating 2 to 3 hours before bed.; try not to rush your food either. Do you use much coriander in your diet? It is used to settle nauseous tummies, and helps to prevent wind, gas and bloating You also might like to try Mintec if your doctor thinks your lower gut is in spasm.You can do this; since you are disabled, have a plan for your fluid intake - ie your visits to the loo. Hope this helps; believe me, there is much you can do to address your problems.

i now hardly eat any vegetables. i eat spinach and eggplant. i usually only eat now one meal a day. i eat oranges and now back to kiwis. i have thrown out so much food. i lost my appetite for tuna and eggs and stopped eating red meat along time ago. i usually do have fresh lemon juice and warm water and sometimes apple vinegar cider to start the day. how do you use coriander?

So, I make coriander tea (using coriander seeds). It is a little bitter so I tend to add a little sugar to it - not honey. I think you can also make tea using cumin, fennel and coriander seeds too. I add Chopped coriander to salads - have one of these every day. The theory behind it is that it relieves stomach cramps, heartburn and constipation, and wind (so if your BMs are ok, you’re less likely to feel windy and bloated) . It’s got fibre in it too, so additional benefits. Just check you’re not allergic to the sun as coriander can exacerbate allergic reactions. (Look ‘on-line’ for coriander tea)

Switch to the low FODMAP diet and avoid fizzy drinks and gluten. Lower your sugar intake as much as possible as well.

I recommend the following

Dont eat and drink

Dont eat too hot or too cold foods

Try chewing more

Use a digestive enzyme (try natural one like pineapple and papaya)

Dont eat late at night

Avoid processed sugars and fried foods, soda, coffee, acidic foods and drink

thanks so much. i just can't give up coffee. i have digestive enzymes but will start using them again. i also use peppermint tea and peppermint supplements and ginger supplements besides the tea and my doctor told me to use maalox for stomach pain also. i just can't give up coffee. that is the one thing i really enjoy too much. i think i will buy some bromaline(sp). now the thought of most foods make me nauseated. i am so afraid.

Hi another thing i find really triggers gas, is sugar alcohols such as frutosacharides, isomolt, maltitol etc, as well i think inulin. So carefully check ingredients on packets.
