One of my best friends is a boy, he has resently told me he likes me a lot and asked if i would like us to be a "thing". I had to say no, i couldnt drag him further down into my anorexia even though he knew some of what was going on. We remained friends but I felt really guilty.
He doesnt help my guilt towards this as he make little coments that make me feel like crap and likes to feel sorry for himself that i said no. i tried to explain to him that anorexia played a big part in my life and i didnt want that for him
He said to me " just get rid of it then, i dont understand why you like it" i have explained to him that i want to be healthy but its not that easy but it really broke me to think he didnt really take an intrest when i told him and he actually thought that i like being this way. I get how frustrating it is for others but is this everyones attitude??

I have found that many people see anorexia as something that you can just cast off whenever you like - they don't see it as an illness. I think unless you've experienced the problem it is very difficult to get your mind round - I know my husband thinks much like your friend - although he is getting more understanding as the years pass. Are you receiving any counselling or help for your problem - I would suggest if not you do seek some help as its not an illness that you can usually recover from alone.
I would hope that any friend would show some compassion and understanding. You seem to be very thoughtful by trying to 'protect' your friend from the disorder, yet he is showing very little regard in his throwaway comments. I would not feel guilty about your initial rejection. Please focus on you and your recovery with people who are patient, warm and understand the complexity of the disorder, or at least take the time to read up on it and try to understand it.
Thank you, i have detached myself from a lot of people and i wanted to give him a chance however, i have taken peoples advice and tried to back off slightly, hoping he may step up but im not sure. I have been doing a lot better as i can concerntrate on recovery rather than the negativity. Thank you for your advice. Xxx
