Interleukin-6 and PMR/GCA
A few days ago I responded to a post in which members were questioning if
statins
had caused PMR. I have received messages asking for more information about my comments. In response to these questions I have written the following which I hope will be of interest and help.

Coming Off Statins - Update June 28, 2018
I came off of
statins
in October 2016. I stopped taking my other medications - ramipril for blood pressure, clopidogrel as an anti-coagulant, and metoprolol (beta-blocker to reduce heart rate and blood pressure) between June and October 2016.

New to site, 'treat as ' PMR rheumatology diagnosis July...struggling already
Was on
statins
for about 11 years but stopped a couple of years ago because of fatigue and muscle pain. Cardiac risk for which they were initially prescribed turned out to be nonsense. And one other odd thing, my oxygen sats are regularly 94/95. I'd expect 98/99. I know it's marginal, but it's odd.

Pain in the buttock .................
Last week I saw my GP who told me it could be bursitis, but today at cardio rehab one of the nurses said it could be my
statins
? I have another GP appointment on Thursday as the pain is unbearable, so should I mention
statins
to him or is it more likely to be bursitis???

Experience with statins??
I know its ot exactly PMR related - but has anybody got experience of being on
statins
? My main concern is I think one of their main side effects is muscle pain - I just can't afford to take anything that causes me anymore pain? My GP just told me I need to go on it. Not a happy bunny!!!

Statins
are recommended for patients with cardiovascular disease, and in those with CVD risk > or = to 10% at 10 years. A reduction > 40% from baseline non-HDL-cholesterol should be achieved.

Statins causing Cirrhosis?
She has been taking
statins
for 16 years however and the research on the internet I've done gives conflicting information - on some sites
statins
can HELP damaged livers but some sites also say that in rare cases
statins
CAN damage the liver. Any info / advice gratefully received.

What do I ask the doctor for?
On phoning my GP for the results afterwards she recommended I start
statins
for the cholesterol which I refused saying I would prefer to try to get it down by diet and lifestyle measures first.

New here, age 66, AMD since November, partial improvement since
Started Areds in February and went back on
Statins
. I have high HDL cholesterol, considered a risk factor in AMD, even though it is the "good" cholesterol. Doc says my improvement is in the top 5%, so I have much to be thankful for.

No diagnosis - treating symptoms only help please
I guess she thinks my attitude needs adjusting :) High Cholesterol - With a level of 12.7
statins
are being pushed. I'm resisting! Dizziness - nothing can help apparently.

Statins post avr
He said everything was fine but he wants me to have
statins
despite my total cholesterol being 4. He says it is preventative. I feel it is a bit over the top given that no plaque was seen on my angiogram

Stopped statins yesterday.
I stopped taking rosuvastatin 24 hours ago, after being on
statins
for 30 years. Late in the day but I'm just finding out how harmful they can be. The practice nurse told me that they needn't be tapered but gave no info about side effects or cholersterol level.

and it was all going so well...........
However, it may be a sign of things to come, meaning I am now more susceptible to further TIAs or full blown strokes, so the 75mg aspirin has been replaced by Clopidogrel, Lisinopril increased from 25mg to 50mg and I have been put on
statins
to bring cholesterol down a bit (hydroxy stays at 4500mg pw

High Cholesterol diagnosis
However, should I decide not to take
statins
, I will not get any further appointments with the Lipid Clinic. I now have to wait for a letter from my GP and then I will make an appointment to go in and talk about it.

Astrovastatin
Does anyone have the answer, are
statins
really that bad long term or is it just internet rubbish. My personal experience was dreadful with
statins
and from what I have read they do more harm than good. Thanks

Atorvastatin
I need to know if it is possible for the side effects to actually get worse for a while after stopping the
statins
before they start to get better. My G.P. tells me that it will be a good couple of months before symptoms go but never mentioned if they would actually get a bit worse first!

The ongoing failure of cholesterol "therapy"
There's a new drug on the market that's even more effective than
statins
at reducing LDL. Amgen's Repatha is to cholesterol what the Russian RDS-220 was to Fat Man: it absolutely obliterates your LDL. It is the Mother Of All Cholesterol Bombs.

Angina
So along came
statins
, beta-blockers and a daily asprin and I joined a health club - I swim for 30 minutes five/six times a week adopting the high intensity routine of a length like my life depended on it and a slower gentle return. Wait 45-60 seconds and repeat.
