Reaction to Taxol (Paclitaxel) and alternatives?

Hi-

I was diagnosed with primary peritoneal cancer in Jan 2024. I had my first chemo last week and reacted to the taxol (paclitaxel) so could only receive bev and carboplatin. I will be switched to taxotere for my next treatment.

Wondering if anyone else has had a reaction to taxol and then received taxotere.

I am nervous about having a reaction to taxotere as well and then not being able to get the full treatment plan. I know everyone is different but just seeing what others have experienced.

Thanks.

Hi,

In 2017, I had a reaction to Pacitaxel. It’s the Cremophor we mostly react to. I was able to prove that I was allergic to the salicylates in the Cremophor and insurance covered Abraxene.

I hear that people don’t have to jump through those hoops nowadays to get Abraxene.

Best wishes to you.

I had a reaction to taxol because they had the flow TOO fast. They slowed it down and I tolerated the taxol

Hi. I had a bad reaction but was able to keep having taxol with more premeds and very slow drip. I wouldn’t worry if I were you because it’s the medium they use in paclitaxel that causes the reaction and you won’t be getting that.

I also had a reaction to taxol. My first infusion I got flushed and they slowed my infusion down. On my second infusion I had an anaphylactic reaction. It was scary. I was switched to taxotere and had no problems with it. I hope you do well on taxotere. It is hard on your nails and hair. Best of luck.

thank you for the heads up on taxotere being hard on nails and hair. did you find that anything worked for you to help with that? Did you lose your hair with taxotere?

I lost all my hair everywhere. The good was that only one or two hairs ever grew back on my legs. The bad news is that my eyebrows came in spotty. I saved my money and finally had them microbladed. Best thing I ever did. My hair on my head came back but it is thinner, finer and straighter. My nails all came loose but held On at the bottom of my nail bed. I put tape around them until my nails grew back. It really hurt when I caught one and It pulled up. They all grew back but are still thin 8 years after I had the taxotere. The funny is that my pubic hair started growing in from the sides but never met in the middle. So I have a little inch and a bit wide runway down there.
