BRCA testing

I just learned something today reading about tennis star Chris Evert having OC Stage 1 because of BRCA testing. I remember it being offered while in a daze in chemo room. Never sunk in as to what it was other than Cancer in genes of family. Got results, negative, even tho both my parents had Cancer. I passed this information on to my only 2 children, boys, not knowing it only was meant for OC or Breast Cancer. Wish they would explain it better. Even tho it cost me nothing, it was of no help, since I have no blood related females in the family.

Hi. It is still relevant to male members of the family, as they can pass it on to female children they might have.

It can also cause an increase risk for pancreatic cancer, although not as high as breast or ovarian. Men can also get breast cancer. Knowledge is power and the more you know, the better for yourself and other family members. I wish my sister had genetic testing when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer 15 years ago. Had I known, I may have caught mine earlier or had a complete hysterectomy since I tested positive after my surgery. I also now have an MRI every year along with my mamogram to spot any signs of breast cancer as I chose not to do a prophylactic mastectomy. I received genetic counseling and it should have been offered to you. My daughter was tested and was positive. She chose to have prophylactic surgeries. My sister tested negative. Not sure why you wouldn't want to be tested.

I was tested and came back negative. Was unaware of some of the facts stated here since I have 2 sons and no grandchildren. Thank you for enlightening me.

A positive BRCA test can also indicate higher risk of male breast cancer, prostate cancer, pancreatic cancer and melanoma, depending on the specific mutation. And your sons could have passed a mutation on to their children if you had been positive. So it is very important for all women with ovarian cancer to have genetic testing.
