2nd time I’ve had severe dehydration from pacletaxol/Carboplatin. I ended up in ER with A Fib again. They didn’t have to shock me this time, IV drips did the trick. I’m not a big water drinker, but I try drinking 64 oz. But I just can’t! It is more than I can tolerate…I will think about doing a hydration infusion 6 days after next chemo. Any secrets to getting more water in? Anyone else having this problem?

Hi GramJ, I had dehydration problems also and ended up in the ER also. I don’t drink enough either, but I have been better. I like my coffee and that can dehydrate you. My nurse just told me to enjoy my coffee, but drink water and other beverages too. She told me that for every cup of coffee, to drink two cups of water so I will not get dehydrated. I am 75 and live in the U.S. also. Drinking enough water also helps with constipation. Sorry to hear about your A Fib, hope you are feeling better. That is interesting about hydration infusion a few days after chemo. I hope that you can avoid that and keep hydrated on your own, but it is nice to know that they can help you with your problem. Forgot to mention that fruit can count as part of your fluid intake. Some fruits contain more juice than others. You just don’t have to drink 64ounces of water. Other beverages count too.

Hi Pianoplayer! Thanks for the tips on hydrating. It has been a real dilemma for me. I ended up in the hospital last year because I drank too much liquid and not enough food and I depleted the sodium in my system. So I’m trying to walk a fine line here. Also when I try to drink more fluids it comes up on me! But 3 weeks out from chemo I feel real good. My Christmas was such fun and I was able to enjoy my sons cooking. Granddaughter and her fiance came down from Lake Superior for the weekend 700+ miles and other granddaughter from Mt. Pleasant Mi. A house full! I hope you and all others on this site had a good Christmas/Hanukah or what ever you inspire to. Blessings to all!❤️❤️❤️GramJ

Hi GramJ, so happy to see that you were feeling better for Christmas with your family. I have been doing pretty well lately. My husband is coping with pancreatic cancer, so we have busy schedules with our appointments. We had a nice Christmas also with our three sons and their families. Hi GramJ, One thing I find helpful in staying better hydrated is seltzer or sparkling water with a good slug of fruit juice in it. I have an insulated tumbler that keeps it cold and refreshing for a long time, and I carry it around the house and keep sipping away. If you prefer a hot beverage, there are many herbal, fruit or mint teas that would taste good and would minimize your caffeine intake. Do keep trying! It's worth it to protect your kidneys. Thanks Mizpurple, My daughter-in-law did buy me some flavored seltzer that I did find easy to drink. Also we have a famous beverage found in Southern Michigan area called Vernor’s Ginger ale. Families have used it for years and years to ease upset stomachs for youngsters and grownup’s alike. Also used to make what we call Boston Coolers……by adding vanilla ice cream. At any rate, I’m finding that easy to get down..GramJ

Use a cup that requires a straw-or just use a straw to drink your liquids

Hi GramJ, I have done this chemo combo twice, blah! ....and the most important thing you need to do is hydrate. It is so very hard to get water down, I know. I drank 8-10 8oz glasses of liquid 2 days before chemo and at least three days after. It flushes the chemo out and helps with side effects. You can try liquid IV. It hydrates your body 2-3 times more with one 16 oz glass. Keep switching your drinks. Lemon water, gatorade with water, cucumber and mint water, broth with water.... Keep anything on hand that will help the taste. I also had to keep switching it up. Try bubbly water too. One of the most difficult things for me too. Much love to you from me. xo

Eat fruits and veggies as they have high water content. Drink ELECTROLYTES, not plain water! Try NUUN tablets in water. I always get IV hydration just before chemo. Foods with water content count as water.
