I was admitted to local small town ER for projectile vomiting on 10/9, transferred to much larger teaching hospital 60 miles away and treated for an intestinal blockage. First 3-4 days worst of my life; terrifying, pain filled, dark. If I'd been given the choice to die, I might have taken it! Surgeons expected to find my abdomen full of cancer, but while a few spots, nowhere near what they expected. I was fed artificially until last Friday. I am still processing it all. If this hospital is typical of teaching hospitals, medicine, nursing and the other professions that staff hospitals are in good hands! Bright young people who are motivated to help others and who listen well!
Right now I am delighted to be home! Am to have outpatient physical therapy. Not sure yet how mbc treatment may change a bit but not too worried about that.

Thank goodness only spots! And I'd say stick with the teaching hospital! A university hospital almost always has the latest treatment and the smartest doctors.
Oh, what an ordeal! You must be glad that the diagnosis was not something serious. Glad you made it home. Never had something like this so I can't offer any advice.
Only a few spots -- that is great news and a welcome relief. I can really empathise with you after two (shorter) stays in hospital in quick succession last autumn. I was really helped by the staff especially nurses and psychologist offering emotional support.
Very difficult to adjust to being at home again though and I felt vulnerable, almost like I had to relearn how to live again. You get used to having a regimented life, centred around lying in bed, so quickly!
So I hope you can take it gently and ease back into the delights of home life. All the very best to you
ugggh that sucks so bad. So traumatic, isn’t it? I have had 35 years of Crohn’s disease so I know what THAT is like! Well, you have past the test! Onwards and upwards from here!

I slept pretty well last night and was able to get myself up and to the toilet with still dry depends, quite a contrast to being in the hospital! I was disappointed that when I got home, our dog ignored me, jumped into the car and started looking for food! LOL, typical of her and I should've known! But she's snuggled up with me every chance she had later, including in bed last night.
Before the projectile vomiting that led us to the ER, my appetite had been poor for quite a few weeks and my bowels had been moving just every 3-5 days for awhile, too. I'd mentioned it to my onc and had seen a NP just a few days before the ER. Wish I'd pushed harder for attention to that, but past is past. Just wanting to stress it here so if any of you, esp with lobular mbc, develop similar symptoms, can push your onc for assessment.

and yes, teaching hospitals are the best.....cutting edge, bright and enthusiastic new docs being mentored by the wise......my favorite place to work when actively working as RN.
