Thank you. I just looked this up and I note the mushroom supplement has vitamen b 12. I've just had a blood test which showed my B12 levels were too high, so guess I need to be careful. What are the enzymes? X

Hi GG33,

I see by your profile that you have completed 13 years of 4th stage breast cancer. However, you indicated that you just started Ibrance in May 2018. What treatment were you taking initially after your diagnosis in 2008?

Cheers,

Cindy

I truly believe to cure we need both our incredible onocologyst, but also our own research and others to help. Naturopath who know cancer, more plant base diet, meditation and gratitude ❤. Thank you for your post.

Hi Debbie,

I agree with you. I rely on my oncologist and would never tell someone to avoid conventional treatment in favour of alternative or complementary therapies. I believe in using an integrative approach to medicine, but to be successful you really need to do your homework. If you choose to pursue an integrative approach you should make sure that you are being supervised by a qualified medical doctor.

I would not feel comfortable trusting someone who is not qualified to take charge of my health. They can end up doing more harm than good. So even if you are interested in taking a new supplement you should always check to see that it's safe for you to do so and that it's not contraindicated with your conventional cancer treatment (or treatment for some other disorder) before you buy it. There have been a number of times people have recommended a certain supplement to me and I have asked for advice from pharmacists, my GP, and integrative doctor before reaching a decision.

I agree with you. Just my opinion that people should not be encouraging other people to try herbs or whatever the "new" alternative treatment is without them checking with their medical doctor first. Personally, I am just not interested in that. I trust my oncos and my cancer center. I do not read books or the latest articles about juicing or some new herbs. But for others, it helps them from a mental point of view if their onco okays it. Whether it is mind over matter is another topic, but as long as your medical team is okay with it, then one should take if it they think it makes them feel better. But I walked inside a vitamin shoppe store once with a friend and was like OMG....look at all this stuff that people buy. There was a woman I used to work with who was into all that stuff and she literally had a bag of "vitamins" and "herbs" and all this stuff she would take every day. Close to 20 kind of pills and some kind of juicing. She was constantly coming down with colds and such. The most unhealthiest healthy person I ever met. I told her that it cannot be good to take such a large quantity of stuff like like she was taking without a doctor's approval. It was supposed to keep her healthy she said. She did not believe in conventional medicine. (She took more sick days than the rest of us combined (LOL).)

I agree I was throwing out what I do..what you do I totally respect… it’s challenging working with our cancer so very important to do what you believe in.. for me marrying a physician ( I apologize all ready. No I do not want any of u to think like me.. just want to explain after being with my husband for many years I see physician just as people ( yes they studied they specialities 4-6 years after being a resident) they are people don’t have all the answers( hopefully they are correct most the time) I only for me like to get stuff from traditional physician and alternative doctors then combine both schools of thought.. it works for me.. please I am just sharing my strategy only for me.. I will just like to throw this out so u might understand me a bit more.. please never want or need anyone to think like me..your cancer is so personal u know what is best for you… good evening sweet dreams dear sisters I so appreciate all of u

Wow! The lady you mentioned sounds like she was very ill informed to be taking a variety of supplements without the support and supervision of a qualified doctor. That is so dangerous! No wonder she wasn't achieving her goals. You shouldn't take something just because someone recommends it. The results could be disastrous.

Is the bone marrow supplement combine with the mushroom are they separate ???I’ll definitely look up these proteolytic enzymes. I will also ask Onc.

Dear Sandra, Thank you for sharing your insights and also food forms of proteolytic enzymes. I have actually never heard of those but I do use kefir in my smoothies every morning and love all of those other things. I will have to incorporate more of them into my diet. Have not had asparagus in a long time as my husband does not like it. Also, what kind of yogurt do you use? I used to use Chobani but found it had too much sugar so I tried some coconut milk ones but have not found one I really liked. I know you are in Canada so you might have different brands there. Also, what is Doctors Best? My counts have been pretty good over the 10 months I have been on Ibrance, but not in the normal range so anything to help boost them up a bit would be great!

Thank you Sandra, that is helpful. I did not realize that the fat in yogurt would help absorb Vitamins D and E, that is good to know. I have heard plain is the best, just have not been able to get used to the taste even with adding things. I will try it again. I have cut out a lot of sugar in my diet, so perhaps my taste buds will better adapt to it. I will also check out Doctors Best if it sold here in the U.S. Hope you are doing well.

Sandra, wanted to get your opinion on mushroom coffee. Have seen several ads for this type of coffee from Four Sigmatic and other brands and wondered if you have ever tried this or heard of it. I've heard it is better than regular coffee and has health benefits. I value your insights through your common sense approach and your medical training. Thanks so much!

Dear Sandra, thank you so much for this information. My doctor was not in favor of mushroom supplements either and now I understand why. I do like to eat mushrooms and I guess I should just incorporate more real mushrooms and other antioxidants into my diet to get the benefits but not the issues that supplements might cause. I am so glad you are doing well and have gotten back enough energy to do some walks as well as riding your ebike. That is great news. Prayers for your continued recovery and thanks again for your response.

Hello there ladies ! I agree with Sophie that we need to be careful taking supplements that may or may not conflict with our treatment plans. I'm on Careoncology.com in addition to taking Ibrance (125mg) and Faslodex . So far I'm thrilled with the results. I did have approved an AWESOME mushroom extract powder that I add to tea, smoothies, salads, meals - anything ! - it's virtually tasteless. It's called SACRED 7. All the biggies in the mushroom department ! Here is the link that I order from Amazon. What I love about this is that I get the full effect without having to down another supplement. amazon.com/gp/product/B01BK...
