Toe issues

Does anyone else have issues with their toe nails? I’ve had two fall off and several are discolored like they are bruised. I will eventually lose them as well. I’ve been on faslodex and Ibrance for 16 months.

Hi SunshineBoss,

Hmmm....I've gotten the same at different points in my life, but it seemed to be related to like running or being similarly active. The toenail hits up against the front of the shoe repeatedly which causes this problem. I've recently resumed running (after a decades long break) and started to have the same issue. Realized that I needed to get running shoes 1/2 size larger than my normal shoe size, and even that doesn't completely resolve it.

Is this actually related to the meds? Maybe? The only thing I can think of (and I'm stretching here...) is low platelets? The Ibrance lowers my platelets, currently...85? .85? Quite low...which can lead to bleeding issues...maybe this affects the toenail beds?

Not very helpful but the best I could come up with before my second cup of coffee!

Good luck with it!

Lynn

I began having nail issues with everolimus. My nails began separating from the beds. They did the same 10 years ago on Taxol. I started using an led light and jojoba and castor oils. It seems to have worked.

I did have a strange thing with one toe. It became very painful and swollen. I soaked in Epsom salts and apple cider vinegar. I also used a lot of topical antibiotic. It was very red and it peeled for a couple of weeks. It is better now, but there is no nail growing in behind the existing nail.

All the best to you! Andi

Wow, that's very interesting - and informative! I really like your ideas for DIY/natural therapies... :)

Did you go to a podiatrist? I did but I don’t think I agree with what she said. She said I damaged the bed of my toe nails and that they are permanently damaged. 🤷‍♀️

Getting a second opinion in a few weeks.

No, I wouldn't imagine a podiatrist would know much about paronychia or onycholysis. I knew that I likely was infected, so I addressed that. I also realized there was likely some cell death, so I tried the LED light and oils. Seems to have worked. Good luck with your second opinion.

I started walking five miles four times a week when the virus hit. Seems quick to cause that much damage in that short of a time period. Oh well. I was just wondering if the drugs were the cause and not from walking. Thanks for your response. ❤️

Hi Lynn: Just adding my experience with foot riding forward in my shoe. I went to a orthotics place to get fitted with a lift. The tumour in my left hip has caused me to walk to the right. Pelvis is tilted to the right as well. I wanted to try and correct this or stop it from getting worse. My left leg is now 3 cm. shorter. I was told that was too much to put inside a shoe and needed to go outside. I didn't want to go to the expense of having several pair of shoes fitted so I went with 9mm. which fits inside. (at least some help). Right away my foot rode forward rubbing my toe on the front of the shoe. She suggested having the orthotic cut to the full size of my shoe rather then just the part under the heel. I haven't tried picked this up yet but I think it will help. At the moment I am still wearing sandals but the weather is changing.

Might be something to consider. Cheers, June S.

Hi Sunshine Boss,

Yes! I have big issues with my toenails. I was on taxotere last year. I finished in July 2019. During that time several of my toenails fell off or the top layer peeled off. I’ve never had any fungus or anything. But now most of my nails are white. I can lift most of them like they are not really attached well to my toe. I am trying to cut them really short so maybe it will finally grow the white out. I keep them painted because they look horrible. No issues with my fingernails once I quit the taxotere. I would also love some advice on this.

Thanks for asking this question.

❤️Stacy

My fingernails and toenails separated from the nail beds during treatment with taxol my first time around with cancer.

When I completed treatment, they reattached somehow.

I've had those issues too. I was a college athlete (volleyball - 87-91) and that may have been the initial source. I noticed with chemo in 2006 it got worse. MBC in 2017 and it hasn't gotten worse but not better either. I do get monthly pedicures with a tip on each large too. No one really knows other than I and my manicurist. I think it has made a great difference in my feet health. The Ibrance and Letrozole have cause neuropathy and peeling of my feet. My manicurist is also training to be a nurse, so she is on top of the situation.

Wow you are so fortunate to have a manicurist that is also training to be a nurse! Let us know if she finds out something that we can do about it! ❤️

Really the only thing she has said to do is put Vicks Vapor Rub under the toes at night. Quite honestly I can't tell a huge difference, but she says that she can! She's closer to my toes than I am - haha!

I had trouble with my nails breaking and getting a fungus like problem. I stopped Ibrance and It took several months but it cleared up. I never had a problem with my toes nails. Hope this helps. I used vinegar and water 15 minutes soaking.

Stopping Ibrance unfortunately is not an option.
