This article about RLS was posted on mercola.com today. It includes a discussion on non-drug therapies and mentions Dangguijakyak-san and Shihogyeji-tang, traditional herbal medicines in East Asian medicine. I wonder if anybody here have tried these and what their experience was with them.

Mercola and Hogwash have a certain affinity.

I like to keep an open mind. I had not heard of these two medicines before reading his article. Bringing it into the public forum may ultimately lead to more investigation and clinical trials. If it leads to a better, safer medication, I for one, would be very grateful.

I looked those Chinese herbs up on amazon and read reviews - none mentioned RLS, and many found them causing loose stools or diarrhea. The active ingredient is Paeoniae Radix - mostly used by people with Sjogren Syndrome or Rheumatoid Arthritis. Mode of action MIGHT have some effect on dopamine. This is the only supplement I found (search on Amazon for additional reviews).

I fail to see what is so funny to you. I posted to this forum with the best of intentions, mostly to be met with ridicule. I won't make that mistake again.

I was laughing at Madlegs comment. I wasn't saying I agreed with her and I have no opinion on the herbs. I'm sorry you felt ridiculed. Absolutely post what you find as it may help others and ignore the naysayers.

If this case study can be relied on, it sounds like a miracle cure!

The subject went from 2 hours to 9 hours sleep per night.

It seems like it's also used for epilepsy.

Have you ever heard of the saying "If it seems to be too good to be true, it probably is."?

Of course we all have heard that truism. However, with so many suffering so badly, I think all possibilities warrant further investigation, especially the ones that report such good outcomes.

Is there a scientific explnation as to why it should work? I've found relief by taking inflammatory foods out of my diet more than adding things in.

That's why I prefaced my comment with "If the case study can be relied on".

Try the link that Amrob123 gave. It takes you directly to the study published by the College of Korean Medicine, Seoul Campus.

I can't comment on those particular herbs because I don't know the names of the herbs I was given. But I consulted a herbalist years ago. Separate I tried traditional British herbs and Chinese herbs for months to no avail.

A systematic review and meta-analysis of Paeoniae Radix-containing herbal medicine for patients with restless legs syndrome (published in the journal Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice, 2019) says:

"Paeoniae Radix-containing herbal group revealed statistically significant improvements compared with non-herbal group.

Treatments with Paeoniae Radix-containing herbal medicine may promote improvements in RLS without side effects.

However, we are unable to draw concrete conclusions owing to limitations of the included studies."

Hopefully this will lead to further, better studies. Let the rigour of scientific study determine if it can be an effective treatment for RLS without harmful side effects.

Thanks so much for this link.

I had read the original Korean report years some years ago and have ever since intended to consult a Chinese herbal medicine practitioner to see if I can try these herbs. Your post has reminded me and I shall definitely pursue this in the new year.

On this occasion I say ‘thanks Mercola’.

There's some evidence of the effectiveness of White Peony root in treating RLS. It's got the same active ingredient as the mentioned medicines afaik (do verify this yourself).
