arranging iron infusion

Hello, I’m having a remote consultation with Dr Toby Richard’s on Thursday with a view to having an iron transfusion in London on 31st May.

I am wondering if other people have experienced any negative reactions / side effects from iron infusions ….. or indeed any really positive results! positive stories are also very welcome…

Most of the things I have attempted to do to help my restless legs have in fact made my situation worse so I am now very sceptical / wary of trying other avenues. At the same time I dont really live a proper life at the moment with so little sleep and now it would seem advanced arthritis in my feet and legs restricting my ability to walk - and all this at 62 which is far too young. So I feel I need to try everything possible to help myself so that I can have a better quality of life and perhaps travel for short periods of time.

Thanks for any information you can give me - Dawn

There are loads of posts on here by members about their experience with iron infusions. Enter the term in the search box and they should appear.

Hello - I did search ‘iron transfusion’ but didn’t get as much information as I had expected …. That’s why I thought I’d ask the question directly xx

While I hope that you get useful replies over the next couple of days, you'll see more past posts and replies if you simply search under 'infusion' as per this link:

I hope that your consultation with Dr Richards goes well

Maybe try to search on “iron infusion”? It’s not the same thing as “transfusion “

hello yes I’ve found quite a few posts… no real reports of it really helping - but also no reports of it really harming… so definitely worth trying I feel xx

Bear in mind - most RLS experts still believe the leading cause of RLS is indeed Iron deficiency in the brain. That said, it is impossible to test for iron status in the bran so, we need to rely on a blood test to assess iron status in the body generally. For me iron supplements produced a DRAMATIC lessening of RLS! I had severe RLS - nightmarish really - almost no sleep. Why, oh why was I iron deficient in the first place? It was probably a combination of a head injury 8 months prior coupled with SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth). The severe RLS was preceded by a few weeks of intense leg cramps. The SIBO reduced the absorption of many minerals including the iron. But - with all the buzz about iron, many RLS sufferers don't respond to increased iron so, until they discover another connection that is all we've got! An iron infusion bypasses the intestinal absorption entirely.

I had my iron infusion on the NHS at St George's, Tooting in 2018. I went direct to them & sent research to back up my request. It was quick, easy and I had no side effects.

Sadly, I'm in the 20% that don't respond, but many do respond positively.

Good luck.
