Excessive sleeping and bowel incontinent
This is extremely common. You will eventually need a catheter for night time. Unless you like getting up multiple times a night to make restroom trips and/or change bed sheets. My dad used an external catheter that was removeable as needed. Everything else I just have to guess really well. Especially bowel movements. If I don't stay on top of it and force him to take him to the restroom, there will be poop everywhere. There is a long road ahead, prepare yourself mentally. If you remember how it was raising a baby, it's a lot like that. We are here for support of course.
He will absolutely need a pull-up. You will need to experiment with which ones keep stuff in the best. As for sleep, what I went through was a mixed bag with my dad. Some days he is extremely sleepy and sleeping most of the day. Other days he is too awake and refuses to sleep and tries to run from the bed.
Hello,
My mother wears Depends every night now and we also have a commode chair beside the bed for nighttime as getting to the washroom down the hall is chancey. Mom feels more comfortable now with Depends on. We also put a large water resistent pad on the bed and have now purchased absorbing pads for her chair etc. Less clean up as things worsen and some integrity in place for mom when it happens during the day. Consistent trips to the bathroom have to be made every few hours to help remove room for accidents. Mom also doesn't drink anything now after 7, and going to the washroom before bed, helps to remove having to get up during the night.
Mom is also chairbound, so she will sit all day watching tv and with her eyes closed on and off. It's tough to keep her busy or active all day so she'll sleep through the night. It is difficult at night with the coughing as well. Thank goodness the warmer weather is here and there are times to get out.
All the best,
Deb
Yes I've experienced this. And the neurologist says even though they go to sleep their brain never gets to the good stage of sleep. And the pull ups are the best thing you can do for incontinence but my loved one regained her ability to know when she had to go to the bathroom. Sitting being chair bound could damage the nerve that tells you have to go to bathroom or constipation happens. Hope this helps.
