How accurate is the PSA test and what factors can influence results? Ejaculation? Diet? Willpower (ha)? What’s the research on this?

As a Gleason Score 10, I’m celebrating three years post-radiation treatments and 18 months free of Lupron injections. For the moment, treatment for me means PSA tests every three months.

My recent PSA came back .19, down from .27 three months ago. My oncologist had expected the results to be well over .3. Before this latest PSA test, I did not have sex for three days. The previous PSA test, I had had ejaculated 12 hours before.

I’ve read of guys panicking if their PSA goes from undetectable to .2. If PSA results can double down, as in my case, are we putting too much faith in PSA results?

For the moment, I’m celebrating good health, and following the advice of the poet John O’Donahue: “embrace this illness as a teacher who has come to open your life to new worlds.”

What you’re reading is for guys who have had prostatectomies. For us guys who have had radiation PSA never becomes undetectable. You are doing just fine.
