I had a Turp procedure about a month ago. I was bleeding lightly for about 3 weeks, that finally stopped. However, I'm still getting pain when I urinate.
As far as I know I do not have cancer, but I had a pretty large prostate (125 ml). The doctor wanted to do the procedure because i was being hospitalized for about 5 days every 6 months with a severe UTI, and he said this would probably reduce the frequency of those incidents. They reduced it to about 85ml.
It begins fine, then towards the end it gets to feeling almost like there is a blockage there and very little comes out, and a fair amount of pain. The pain goes away pretty quickly, anywhere from 30 seconds to 2 minutes. I'm also having increased urgency since the procedure, but I'm hoping that will work itself out in time, I'm more concerned about the pain when urinating.
I am about a month out now. I have a follow up appointment in about 17 days and I don't want to be alarmist about it, but I just don't know how 'normal' this is.
Anyone here have a similar experience or advice? Thanks!

I have been going with this for 2 months now, I thought I would update my situation.
I was having pretty bad pain at the end of urination, very similar to the feeling just before things close up when you have an infection. Right before they have to do a foley.
Urgency is off the charts, I have anywhere from 3-10 seconds.
They did a blood and urine test after 6 weeks and came up with inflammation, no infection.
I went in 2 days ago and had a cystoscopy. He found a fair amount of calcification and scraped (ouch!) most of it away.
As of this morning, everything is status quo, no change.
He said this should give me substantial pain relief within a couple of weeks, and I am going back to see him in 3.5 weeks, unless I have other problems before that.
Does this all sound normal? He assures me that there is nothing weird going on that he saw with the cystoscope.
Not prescribed, I guess I should inquire? Sorry, I did have that under a different name, phenazopyridine. The stuff that turns things orange, right? I used that after the original TURP procedure, it didn't seem to help, haven't tried it since the cystoscopy.
I do notice that it seems to get worse as the day goes on, and definitely worse when I am sitting, if that's of any consequence.
Once again, I appreciate you more than you know. Everyone else here also, of course.
It's available over the counter. Just try it. Be careful about staining - don't wear white underwear and sit to pee so it doesn't splash. It stains everything orange.
It's OTC? I'll have to look for it, it might be cheaper OTC, I don't remember what I paid for it.
I don't know if this is significant or not, but I notice that it bothers be when I am sitting down in particular, maybe even more so when I go to sit down, like there's some kind of pressure going on there. Is that a thing or am I getting overly analytical?
My saga continues:-(.I have no improvement after he scraped away some calcification with the tip of the instrument when he did my cystoscopy.
Now he suspects bladder stones (which I had never heard of until now) and that I need a better scraping of the calcifications, so he is going to do it in hospital under general anesthesia.
So, I am still essentially in the same pain I was in the day after the TURP, 2.5 months later. Severe pain when I pee, almost like a numbing ache when I sit, and about 3-5 seconds warning to pee. Due for the in hospital Cystoscopy on Dec. 1st.
I am sort of at the end of my pain rope here, I look forward to goign to bed just to get away from the pain and I dread waking up, which I tend to do in about 4 hours, after which I'm unable to get back to sleep, so I have been living on about 4 hours sleep a night for 2 months now. This is really getting old, i am so past this.
On the plus side, my PSA went from about 10 down to 2.6, which I guess proves that the reason for the high PSA in the first place was the size of the prostate?
Any thoughts?
Ps: The Pyridium didn't seem to do anything.
Again, thanks so much for your advice. I trust the doctor, but you are in many ways my 'second opinion.'
I had a TURP about 3 years ago. I had very little bleeding (minor for a few days only) and the healing was fairly quick - 3 - 4 weeks after which the urination was basically pain free.
Hopefully, a bit more time is needed in your case to feel better. It sounds like you had a fair amount of tissue removed - so it makes sense that the healing is taking longer .....
I am 1.5 years post TURP and I still have discomfort and pain, occasional blood. It feels like a scab inside that never heals. Good luck, I hope yours gets better.
