I have heard conflicting reports on when to start kegel exercises. Do you start before surgery or after surgery?

I was advised (but certainly not mandated) to start prior to surgery - gives you some practice and starts to build up sphincter, and more or less, it cannot hurt. No kegels while catheter in place, resume kegels once catheter out.

I was told to do them prior to surgery and I did them every day three times a day for the 8 weeks prior.

Don't know if it was that but I had no incontinence to speak of, some leaks for about a week but fully dry thereafter.

Hope that helps

My husband was not told to do Kegels prior to surgery, which was a blatant oversight on the urologist's part. Everything I learned afterwards indicated he should have started prior to surgery as a way of getting a head start, so to speak. As it turned out, he received Physical Therapy some weeks post surgery, which was helpful but I think it took him longer to learn them & regain continence, etc.

So -- in my humble opinion, do the Kegels now!
