1st appointment after finding out you are pregnant

I found out that I am pregnant just a week ago and based on the NHS calculator, I am 6 weeks today. I have referred myself to Northwick Park Maternity but have no idea when I will get my first appointment.

This is my first pregnancy so I have a few concerns:

1. Should I be taking specific vitamins in addition to folic acid and Vitamin D? My GP is not being helpful and has asked me to wait for the appointment with the maternity doctor.

2. When will my first appointment be?

3. Is Northwick park Maternity good at all? I have read mixed reviews but this is the one closest to me.

Would appreciate advice.

So you should have a booking appt at about 10 weeks where you will be asked a lot of questions about family history, your medical history, your partner’s medical history etc. You should also get an appt through for a 12 week scan.

I am not a doctor, but I had a scan at 5.5 weeks due to symptoms of ectopic pregnancy - the obstetrician advised taking Pregnacare vitamins so I took those for the remainder of my pregnancy.

Hi and congratulations on your pregnancy! It is generally recommended to take special maternity vitamins. You don't want to be taking general ones as they have much higher concentration of vitamins than that safe for your baby and also contain vitamin A, which is not recommended during pregnancy. There are lots of brands of maternity vitamins to choose from, might be a good idea to see what is available in your local pharmacy. I am sure the pharmacist will be happy to give you guidance. Good luck!

I recommend taking the folic acid and vitamin d supplement from Boots. I wouldn't recommend a multi vitamin like Pregnacare, too much iron gives terrible constipation.

Oh and your first NHS appt is at 12 weeks as long as you've done a self referral online, you just wait until your letter comes through for your appt. Private scans that you pay for are a lot earlier if you choose to.

hey hope you’re doing well. I had my booking done by phone at 6 weeks and then an in person health check in clinic an some bloods done. My scan is booked for week 13 I believe. Sorry your GP is so unhelpful. I spoke with mine as I take vitamin d and folic acid anyway. I also take the pregnacare ones. I was told it was fine to take extra
