Back in the days of tanners and bobs,

When Mothers had patience and Fathers had jobs.

When the children of families wore hand me down shoes,

And T.V gave only two channels to chose.

Back in the days of three penny bits,

when schools employed nurses to search for your nits.

When snowballs were harmless; ice slides were permitted

and all of your jumpers were warm and hand knitted.

Back in the days of hot ginger beers,

when children remained so for more than six years.

When children respected what older folks said,

and pot was a thing you kept under your bed.

Back in the days of Listen with Mother,

when neighbours were friendly and talked to each other.

When cars were so rare you could play in the street.

When Doctors made house calls; Police walked the beat.

Back in the days of Milligan's Goons,

when butter was butter and songs all had tunes.

It was dumplings for dinner and trifle for tea,

and your annual break was a day by the sea.

Back in the days of Dixon's Dock Green,

Crackerjack pens and Lyons ice cream.

When children could freely wear National Health glasses,

and teachers all stood at the FRONT of their classes

Back in the days of rocking and reeling,

when mobiles were things that you hung from the ceiling.

When woodwork and pottery got taught in schools,

and everyone dreamed of a win on the pools.

Back in the days when I was a lad,

I can't help but smile for the fun that I had.

Hopscotch and roller skates; snowballs to lob.

Back in the days of tanners and bobs

springcross profile image
springcross in reply to MadBunny

I don't know about the lady at the back but he's posted it before a few months back. I had a grandma (who was gone before I was born) who apparently was a very formidable lady - she dragged my dad's teacher off his pushbike by his ear. 🤭

MadBunny profile image
MadBunny in reply to springcross

Love it !!!! You didn't mess with those ladies 😁Mind you my grandma had to bring 5 kids up single handed, as grandad died quite young. The eldest helped out with the kids while grandma took on cleaning jobs.

springcross profile image
springcross in reply to MadBunny

The teacher alway used to pull my dad by the ear in the classroom and he always had problems with that ear, so she waited for the teacher to cycle home from school one night and grabbed him. She pulled him off the bike onto the floor and said "there's plenty more of where that came from if you pull my son's ear one more time". She apparently was a real tough cookie and didn't take any messing from anyone. My dad always suffered with that ear though all his life after that.

MadBunny profile image
MadBunny in reply to springcross

I was born in 1960 before Mc Donalds and fish n chips was an affordable Friday tea . We had Jiffy jellies in glass dishes and at Nans cream was a tin of Carnation Evaporated milk . She used to think she was posh buying Irish Mallow Biscuits . I used to be bought a bag of cheap chocolate - Sharps chocolate tools which I shared with the dog . When I was older I liked Sounds newspaper . It always smelt of strong ink . I used to pinch my sisters Petticoat magazine as it has a naughty problem page .

springcross profile image
springcross in reply to focused1

Our fish and chips were Saturday dinner for which we queued forever - down the road and round the corner. I remember Jiffy Jellies and Carnation Evaporated Milk too. Also Kraft cheese slices and sterilised milk which was used for tea (not the cheese slices though 😂). We used to have the broken biscuits. I remember the sliced bread wrapped in wax paper and cold meat being sliced in front of you on a machine while you waited but the corned beef was always done with a knife by hand.

focused1 profile image
focused1Reading Rabbits in reply to springcross

Libbys corned beef in a long slim tin and St Ivel cheese in a blue box - some sort of lactic cheese . Oh the sterra milk in the glass bottles with a slim neck and a beer bottle top .Vesta meals which you can still buy but not seen the curry ones for ages . I loved the Ski yogurt in pots that looked like Daleks and seemed to be bigger with loads more fruit than you get nowadays .

Threepenny pieces, reminds me of going to church. The first school I got sent to, you went to church twice on a Sunday, Matins and Evensong. For each of these we had to be in our best Sunday uniform and wearing gloves. The teacher checked that each child had a threepenny piece in her gloved hand, for collection, bang went most of your pocket money.

Well, this has been interesting. I was born in 1970 in Michigan. How times have changed from how I grew up. Do the 12 and 13 year olds still take classes in BOTH home ec and shop like I did????? No, I guess their all sitting in front of computers learning all their marketable computer skills. No one knows how to sew a shirt or a pillow together, and no one knows how to solder a metal shovel together like I did or use a coping saw to carve wood. And none of these youngsters have any passable handwriting, they print and type and send emails and texts instead of an old fashioned caring letter. Very short and to the point .
