Just a thought... With things generally not looking too clever round the corner.. How many people are now building their own websites??

I ask this because despite these facile TV adverts boasting that you can have a website in an hour.... Forgive me if I choke silently upon that ludicrous statement!!

It's a lie!

Technically you can, but in reality you can't! You need better... that's what I quickly found!

I have been working very hard upon such a project.

I have learnt a huge, titanic amount along the way; all extremely hard won experience, including overcoming rotator cuff injury, and so much more. Throughout the first lockdown here in the UK, I suffered two quite serious accidents that I'm not over yet. The dictation facility on my new phone is a huge help!

As connecting to the outside world has become more important than ever for our well being, and as I know there to be many extremely talented folk on this forum, painters, miniature teddy bear artistes and so much more... I should imagine many such folk are interested in getting their websites up and running, I should say????

I have learned much and would be happy to share my experiences if anybody needs to exchange ideas.

I believe in practical, self help and achieving things to help me get through difficult times... So if anybody needs help, advice or shared ideas... I'm here. Plus I will always learn something new from you too!

Keep on staying cheerful and safe.

Well... There's so much to consider! If it were ONLY the building of the website, I could probably build two decent site a week!!

The problem is the photography.

That's the hard part.

Controlled Lighting is everything.

Then depending upon your product/s assuming it is/are products that you are promoting, there is the psychology of the products involved as well as the target market you are aiming at. Some products require multiple views... Then there is the editing. Blimey another profession in itself! Just learned the editing suite is a job in itself!

One has to keep it simple, keep it sweet and assume that the primary format to be viewed upon will be the mobile phone. Once interested, the viewer will no doubt return on the desktop format to look more closely. However, this means that essentially one has to design 2 websites in tandem, side by side.

Then there is the legal aspect, depending on what your specific aim/product is.

So many things to consider.

It's been tough and it's bey a marathon... But I'm getting there.

The other problem is you can get so obsessed, so stuck in, half a day goes by and you don't even notice you haven't eaten let alone risen from your desk! It gets compulsive and of course if feels as though you are moving at a snail's pace!

However, today I learned how to position an 'anchor' within the specifically targeted area on the selected page...and to create a link to it! So I'm thrilled!

Bit by bit, I'm getting there!

😁😁😁

Sounds like a good way to lose weight, but if I sit for more than an hour I get stiff. So my resolution is do more exercise.

Are you working on one too??

Well done with you endeavours and the main point I suppose is that no matter or how fast you accomplish your own website, it brings a great feeling of satisfaction when it's successfully done. Good for you!

I tried Wix originally, but because of the complexity of my product their 'shop' facility was too basic. I tried to work my way around it but found eventually that the template I'd chosen just wasn't good enough. Then life got in the way, so I quit for a while.

Then at the start of lockdown Iast March I took another in look at WiX. Because they have had such a huge influx of money due to so many people using their templates to set up internet businesses, they have been very bright and reinvested in their own business; they are offering better more varied templates... So I've gone with them again. It's far better this time.

Also they allow this time around for you to have two website templates open simultaneously... So I can copy my work from the first site I worked on... to my new site. The payment facilities are also better.

I think they are pretty good.

Take another look and see if they have new templates that might suit your purposes better, before going for Etsy, I'd say.

Hope that helps.

It's the photography aspect that is the titanic struggle I have found...πŸ₯΄

Good luck

you can have a website up in an hour if you are happy that it is a crap site that nobody likes and never performs in the google search engines - of course they have to make it sound quick and easy or they get no customers.

I totally agree!!

most see getting a website up as a get rich quick scheme, it's naive. you need experience in owning and running a successful business, a good idea, and money to invest, and people would not spend years learning how to do good websites and seo if an amateur could just do it instantly properly - hire a professional - or spend years learning how to do it properly - I spent two years on it, because most of the professionals are not very good or not reliable/honest - plenty will charge you to do stuff they do not even do - like the emperors new clothes !

How aptly chosen is your handle 'Wiserlady'!!!! I am impressed. I have indeed learned the hard way! I have indeed taken more than two years to get to where I am... And we did try to pay professionals to build it for us, but they failed miserably. The phycology of understanding the product and how the target audience will behave is also key...and they didn't have a clue! Ah well you live and learn...who was it who said 'hard gained experience is expensive!'

free free to pm me - website designers want to just concentrate on putting colours, pictures words and frills on pages and moving onto the next . they wont get to know the product and all the rest, time is money and its time consuming, and anyway they are web designers not business people, marketing experts and advertisers. most of the web designers know nothing about seo at all, or will not spend any time on getting it right for you, that is far more time consuming than making the site look good but useless. without seo your site gets nowhere at all. the only people who see it are a handful who click on a link. it has to be found in google to do well. that means a lot of keyword analysis before you even start.
