G for great Wallowa. Mama and baby great horned owlets having a bit of a snuggle. It has the 'ahhh' factor! 💖

I really like these Wallowa, thanks. It took me 8:4. I rescued an owl - a Little Owl in the late 80s. I found it upside down in a small shrub/tree hollow which had five or six complete grown knots which had each grown into the centre of the hollow at slightly different levels. I stepped over a barbed wire fence on my way taking my dog out and saw the feathers and feet of a smallish bird which I really though was a Song Thrush upside down in this hollow. It was so still that I thought it was dead. I touched it and it moved its legs. I was really scared as although I like birds, I didn't used to like touching them because they felt so bony. When I realised by feeling down that it had manoeuvred its way down in between these knots and was totally trapped by it's neck (probably trying to get an insect), I had to run back home and get a hacksaw blade (which was the only things small enough to go in there between the bird and the knots and go back and saw each one of these knots off which took a long time as they were quite hard. My hand that was holding the blade was really sore and the other one I used for pushing the feathers to one side as I was afraid I would harm the bird. Eventually I released it but the poor thing was so weak it couldn't fly. I could see it was an owl but it was so small (I didn't know at the time that there was a species called Little Owl. It was a bitter winter's day so I put it inside my coat and walked around with it for a long time and then tried to make it fly but it kept dropping so I took it home and rang a bird expert who lives nearby and he told me what the species was. I took it to the vet who specialised in birds and it stayed there for a week - it was underweight and had worms and the vet said it had probably been trapped for a couple of days. He put it on a drip and brought it back up to the weight it should be and also wormed it and rang me to come pick it up and release it where I found it. I have photos but taken so long ago they are not on computer. Beautiful little thing it was and he got quite attached to me. It was such a privilege. x
