Seeing differently

It can be hard when we have to stay at home for any length of time. This happened to me several years ago through ill health. One of the things I discovered that I could still do was take photographs. Photos out of the window of the field opposite our house at different times of the day meant that I started noticing the way the sky changes colour throughout the day, the shadows changed and over time the trees and field changed. Things I'd not seen especially before when I worked.

Photos can be taken of anything - a spider's web, the shape of a cup, clean water, the colours of food, house plants, The list is endless. My husband uploaded many of them as a slide show, I learnt how to edit and crop them.

There are many online courses and Youtube videos available as we slow down and move from our normal routines to find new ones, and different ways of keeping connected and building good communities.

Hi strongmouse,

What a wonderful insight into a world of limited contact that you really understand as you've already experienced it before.

Taking up photography is a wonderful idea. As you said, anything can become your subject, no matter how shrunken your world has become. I hope your post will encourage others to give it a try. Is that one of your own pictures you've posted? It's beautiful. I'm not sure we can all achieve that sort of standard, but experimentation is always a good thing. Who knows what we mightn't achieve? And we are lucky, as this must be endured, that we have so many absolutely free resources online, like YouTube.

Thanks so much for sharing this idea with us. Even if we only have a camera on our smartphones, we can at least give this a try.

Sending very best wishes.

Thanks, yes we are getting organised with the help of food deliveries and a kind neighbour. Sorting out medicines tomorrow with the local pharmacy. We have found enough kind people to help with what we need.

What a good idea, the photo you posted is beautiful, I take it you are in the UK, I am not much of a camera person myself, but I think that is a wonderful way to keep yourself busy. I just bought a book on rock painting. I had done some about 16 years ago in a class and loved it. I will read the book to see which supplies I need to buy, then take a risk and go to a hobby shop and get what I need, go to the local rock seller and buy a few rocks!!! I wish you well, take all good care....Sending Love n Hugs....Sprinkle 1.....

Thanks Sprinkle1. Yes we live in the south of England. Some places do deliveries to your home if it is safer for you. Be safe and enjoy your painting.

Yes it was taken using on the camera icon on an ordinary i-phone. I have no training in photography but had left the phone by the window so that I could take a photo whenever I saw something different. Since then I seen so many interesting things. You notice the light and shadows, ordinary things. Have a go! With digital cameras you can simply erase the blurred or wonky ones.

That's very true Zoonie.

That is great Cat33.

An interesting idea that if you perhaps don't have beautiful scenery near you then friends photos can be very cheering. Honestly although I do is click and point. There is a small bit that helps you zoom in. I am hopeless at taking people though as I end up with heads out of focus and of someone waving a hand in front of the camera!

Whatever brings cheer and hope - pass it on.

Celendine is beautiful but it can take over! Unfortunately my asthma kicked off today as the lovely sunshine has meant the tree pollens levels are soaring, but apart from that I am staying well as possible and grateful to have a lovely husband and helpful neighbour.

That is another thing I find helps to manage at home - to look for all the wonderful gifts of love, kindness and beauty around us each day, no matter how small. Have a good weekend.
