Interesting, I was put on supplements some years prior to me getting osteoporosis and actually still take them, calcium, B12, but D, folate etc

Even though long off Pred at my last DEXA scan although good, it was recommended to stay on VitD/Calcium supplement - so I have.

I definitely would , drs put me on them years prior to me getting osteoporosis but I had severe osteoarthritis in all my joints and my spine, I’ve already had TLIF surgery to repair spinal spondylosis and bilateral fractures S1/l5 but now levels above are starting with exact same pain, they won’t be able to operate because I’m too deconditioned for a general anaesthetic.

Thankyou. Yes...I have the ZOE app and have listened to it today. Makes for very interesting listening with some new thinking around the need for calcium supplements! I'm still trying to work out what I think about that!

See my replies - the calcium thing applies to healthy persons who are eating a good diet. We are not healthy and taking a medication that depletes calcium uptake from the gut. There is one paper I know of that showed that but also mentioned that the problems were found in younger women taking ONLY calcium with no vit D added. It is a lot more complicated that they make it sound.

👍👍👍 I didn't take that fact into account. I do take Vit. D3 & K2 but not calcium as my blood tests always shown on high end of normal.

Should I be believing those results?

The other point is that the blood level doesn't necessarily reflect the bone status. Blood calcium levels must be kept within a relatively narrow range - too high or too low is bad for muscles and that includes the heart which is just a muscle. If your blood calcium falls too low, then calcium is scavenged from the bones.

And anyone who is on a bisphosphonate needs a calcium supplement or they risk developing a low blood calcium as the calcium is sent preferentially to the bones.

Thanks Pro. That's clarified a few things I was previously unaware of.

You may not need a supplement if you eat LOTS of cheese and specific veggies and I didn't take calcium for a long time as the bladder grit caused cystitis - but I think they were a bit dismissive when it relates to people like us.

It's the balance that is so difficult - too much cheese means calories and fat!

Haha!...tell me about it!! I'm already on statins too but I do eat some cheese & natural live yogurt. I also eat lots of collard greens and tinned sardines (with the bones) Nuts, seeds edamame beans.

So I'm trying my best, but perhaps should reconsider going back on the calci-D!

Not sure what my cholesterol is currently, I though it was still on the high side despite the ezetimibe but the cardiologist was perfectly happy about it! If SHE thinks it is OK, who am I to argue ...

Kendrew in reply to PMRpro

My total is 5.1 and LDL is 1.1Cardiologist wants it below 5.0 and 1.0 respectively so may mean a statin dose increase. Could be worse.

Awaiting results of a CT coronary angiogram and going for an Echocardiogram on Sat as follow up to the episode where I was ambulanced off to A&E a few weeks ago.

Heck! I lead such an exciting life! 😄

All good fun! I was already in hospital when my cardio events were identified after a drug reaction. I can still remember the expressions on their faces when they just couldn't get the HR down from well over 200. The patient in the next bed requested a transfer to the corridor for some peace - ICU was full!

Haha! You don't do anything by halves do you! My heart rate was actually a satisfactory 60 bpm as I lay on the couch for my angiogram, but they wanted it under 60 so I had some IV Propanolol (on top of my daily dose) and that was it!!!..... totally chilled out for most of rest of the day! 😄

There's always an upside to everything! 😄
