That is a new one on me - PMR makes blood sticky???? I am on blood thinners for atrial fibrillation - but nothing to do with the PMR except that the autoimmune part of PMR almost certainly damaged the sinus node that governs heart rate.

The only logic I can think of is that having stopped using ESR to monitor patients they are looking at plasma viscosity which rises in response to inflammation. If the PV is higher, that suggests thicker plasma and, in theory at least, that might increase the risk of clots. They used to give low dose aspirin to GCA patients as a platelet inhibitor to make RBCs slippier and reduce them sticking together but it was stopped because the risk of bleeding far outweighed any benefit.

Hi Pro. Never used blood thinners until my PE and DVT. Also never took NSAIDS. Need to stay on low dose Eliquis for the PE. Never for PMR or GCA.

Was it definitely for the PMR not something else?

I would think taking blood thinners would make the risk of extra bleeding when you damage your skin ( which I frequently do ) more likely.

Currently visiting the surgery to have a nasty wound on my left shin dressed.😔

Not necessarily - I'm on anticoags, the bruising isn't really any worse.

I’ve had PMR for pushing 10 years now, treated with steroids for around 7 years and haven’t heard of it causing sticky blood. I’ve recently started taking Apixabin, anticoagulant for newly diagnosed atrial fibrillation. Like PMRPro, can’t say bruising etc is any worse, but I’ve been told to seek medical advice immediately if I bang my head because of increased risk of cranial bleed. Once you get on the merrygoround, it’s non stop fun! Not. Good luck.

I've been on blood thinners - Apixaban-since a PE in 2020 possibly connected to GCA flare at same time. Don't seem to have any problems with the permanent holding dose of 2.5 Mgs 2x day. Surgery checks bloods regularly, I understand for possible effect on liver. Never heard about PMR sticky effect.

I have taken Plavix for about 20 years for aortic stents....the only problem now with prednisone is bleeding when I bump those dastardly red blotches on my arms.
