Our Brazilian cleaner says as she breezes in every week! Advice please. GP put my Steroids up from 2mg to 15mg for 2wks to reduce the high inflammation markers. I was also Pre Diabetic but my new regime of very low sugar diet worked so no longer. All levels came right down CRP 59 to 23 etc. GP suggests reduce by 1mg each week til 10mg then maybe more slowly. Any ideas to get back to 2mg. Im walking so much better after the higher dose no wheelchair on short trips. Thankyou all for your most interesting replies to clients. We learn something new daily by them.

From 2mg to 15mg is a bit OTT - usual advice is to add 5mg to previous dose you last felt okay. .. and follow this advice, which as you can see means after the initial increase, provided you're not on that for more than 14 days you can drop back down quite quickly -

Did you have any symptoms of a flare - or did GP just react to high inflammation levels? .. and was it to a one-off reading, or were they repeated a week or so [before the increase] to see if they were same or rising.

Following your GPs recommendation you can see you are going to take a lot longer to get back down.

Think we need a bit more information before we can suggest how you reduce...

Did reply earlier, but it seems to have disappeared… so I’ll try again ,

2mg to 15mg is quite a hike, certainly more than we normally suggest for a flare - any reason for GPs action <other than high inflammation markers? You don’t say…

Did you have any symptoms alongside those markers - and were they just a one-off test, or did you have a couple to see if it was a glitch first time around?

Usual advice for flare is here - so you can see your GPs suggestion is going to take a lot longer to return to your previously low dose. Think we need to know more, for example is anything else going on, before we can give advice

Thankyou Dorset Lady, my GP simply reacted to continous high inflammation markers, sorry the 15mg daily was for 4wks {no flare} the improvement in walking was amazing. Its like Ive found my legs at last! It was a one off reading. I do worry now how to climb back down. Had no call so had to inquire myself. A different GP I dont know called & suggested 1mg a week. The other factor she said I was Pre diabetic so I revued my diet now about 8g sugar a day seemed to work so no longer Pre diabetic. It was very close. We used to get print outs of our blood tests but now its all in Patient Access. My Homeopath can interpret them but no printer at the mo so had to send her screen shots! So please tell me how, thankyou so much

Tell you what? How to get back down?

If you were on 15mg for less than 2 weeks you can drop down to just above previous dose… but you probably need to do it in 2 or maybe 3 stages.

1. To 9mg for about a week -then to 3mg for at least a month before you consider whether to re start taper, or

2. To 11mg for about a week -then to 7mg for same period - then to 3mg as above….

No guarantees, but it’s either that or follow GPs plan.

But given that you have built up inflammation and markers - I don't think you should be going back to 2mg - it almost certainly is too low for the current level of disease activity. Go there and it will start all over again. I would try 10mg for a couple of weeks, 5mg for a couple of weeks and see how that works. If 5mg leaves you as well as you are now - it is worth it isn't it?

Oh I absolutely agree & tho pleased I reduced using the DSM I felt at the back of my mind that my body wasn't quite ready hence the high inflammation markers. Why hurry. I have all the time in the world! Walking so much better so the 15mg def helped. Thankyou so much..steady on now. Thankyou to the wonderful Dorset lady always there for us, & your good self. My Rheumy has cancelled the last 2 appts!! So not much help there! Bless you both xxx
