Swelling and bruising.

Fell down the stairs but apart from a few minor bruises only ended up with badly swollen and black and blue toes and foot. Not a lot of pain. Lucky!

My question arises from the fact that the swelling and bruising is disappearing much quicker than I would expect, having only treated it with painkillers.

I am in my 80's, on 5.5mg Pred and begin reducing again next week very very slowly.

Is my Pred responsible for the speedy healing or, dare I hope it, may my adrenals be responding?

Thank you.

Ouch! I don't think either are really the reason for quick dispersal of bruising - I think you are being lucky and they were fairly superficial!

You were checked out properly after the fall weren't you? Dangerous things stairs!

And I would leave the taper for a bit - a fall can be enough to trigger a flare.

Thank you.

I know how it happened (stupidity in part) and I checked myself out for movement and confusion and felt there was no problem. I have not experienced any increase in fatigue or 'swooning'.

I had wondered about staying on 5.5mg for a bit - will see how things go in the next few days. In general terms I think my tapering is going as well as can be expected.

I plan a consultation with my GP when I reach less than 5mg (later in the year) to discuss tapering and the still-present fatigue and dizziness and, hopefully, to get an adrenals test and possibly a bone check. Which reminds me - my last bone check showed osteopenia in one hip so I think I was lucky not to break anything (arm took a hit, too).

I may try to persuade my partner to think again about a stair lift as we both struggle.

Thanks again.

Very sensible to go for chair lift ,especially as both a little unsteady. You were lucky(?) this time, you may not be again...and agree no reducing for a while..

I fear that as we age you can damage stuff that only shows up later very insidiously plus we just don't recover as well at 82 as 28! Annoying but reality ... Drummed into me by years of experience and a paramedic daughter!

I got a stair lift before I had my hip op, I had got to the point where I could hardly move. Having had my hip op I probably don’t need it any more but I have kept it! I got mine second hand locally. There is a guy who works for Stannah and picks them up quite cheaply from people who have died mainly.

Small disability grants are provided to help finance the cost of a stairlift and other equipment. You cannot apply yourself but your doctor or some such person could apply for you.

They say they are ideal to take the washing back up to put away!

I had a discussion on this with a friend recently and we decided you need to have two people to do the laundry effectively! It could work if you have a wide staircase of course. It is then really useful for suitcases when people come to stay. Thinking about it, I should start to worry about my current conversation level!

No you just carry on -it’s amusing but irrelevant to me -I live in a bungalow 😂🤣

That is ideal. I am now very aware of stairs, while in days gone by I did not even think about them.

Actually it has its downsides-I do try and find steps/stairs to climb when I can…just to keep things going..

I went from having two lovely bungalows to an impossible Victorian cottage which seems to have steps everywhere, between rooms even. It was so painful when I had hip problems.

Yes sure it was -was happy I was in my bungalow with hip and knee issues. Can never have it all can we? 😊

If you can’t have it, get a stair lift!

I have the choice - flat on one level, lift to the 2nd floor but stairs too.

I would agree with PMR. It took me 3 weeks to recover. I lost skin, and damaged ribs but whatever the severity your body is trying to cope with the event and will use energy and resources to get you back to normal. Glad you are ok.

Dorset Lady: that was the reason that my partner did not want a stairlift. She is much less mobile than me but she says the exercise is good for her. Of course, one can always walk up the stairs without using the lift.

As for suitcases, I agree. Actually it was a hoover that I was carrying that did for me!

How about a second vacuum for upstairs? Cheaper than a stairlift ...
