Pred/adcal

Advice please - is it necessary to take Adcal when my bone profile shows good calcium levels?

When I next speak to the Doc (in a months time!) Im going to ask him if he will prescribe me just Vit.D.

I had supposedly high cholesterol when starting on Pred several months ago, even though no one told me the scores.

Could anyone help with these? These were from bloods few weeks ago.

Are they normal/high?

Many, many thanks.

Serum cholesterol 7.03 mmo1/L

serum HDL ch. 2.05

total ch.:HD ratio 3.4

This is what NHS in UK says -nhs.uk/conditions/high-chol...

As you don’t state in your profile where you live, you may need to check figures locally…that’s why we ask people to state country of residence.

You can get your calcium levels checked - so might be worthwhile asking for that before or when you see doctor.

Recommended for Serum cholesterol:

Below 5.18 mmol/L Desirable5.18-6.18 mmol/L Borderline highAbove 6.18 mmol/L High

Has your doctor commented? If not I should not worry.

The reason we have vitamin D with calcium prescribed for PMR is that you need vitamin D to absorb the calcium. I would imagine your doctor will not prescribe you vitamin D only unless your vitamin D is low.

If you don't take AdCal then you do need to be sure you have plenty in your diet. The bone profile is a guide but you do need to be sure there is plenty of calcium available to your bones and pred tends to send it scooting through the gut and less is absorbed. Having plenty around makes it more likely you will absorb enough and as long as the blood level is good your body won't scavenge calcium from the bones. The blood level is important to make the rest of your body work properly - very high or low calcium isn't good for the muscles, including the heart, and you can become quite ill. So the blood level can look OK even though the bones may not be.

The total cholesterol is a bit up - probably due to the pred. The HDL is good though too and that also contributes to the total so they may not make a fuss.

I am 69 I started with PMR two years ago my Consultant wanted me to take Adcal because I am over 65 I was aware that my bones were good so I asked for aDexta scan which proved that my bones were in excellent condition My Consultant agreed that no Adcal was needed. Two years later I have been rescanned and my bones are still fine

If you take calcium, then this is what you need to know:Your body can only absorb 500 mg at a time, so 1500 is too much at once. Calcium carbonate is poorly absorbed. Citrate would be better. If you take calcium it should be balanced with magnesium 2:1. Otherwise you can get heart palpitations. Good luck. Jane

The label is for the calcium carbonate content (1500mg) which is equivalent to 600mg elemental calcium so it isn't too bad. The dose is also 2x daily so with 4 hours between doses, you will absorb almost all of it. The problem comes with the newer versions that claim 1x daily dosing is good. They should be split.
