Adenomyosis

I have recently found out I have adenomyosis. This was found during an operation to remove both ovaries and fallopian tubes. My consultant says a hysterectomy is the only cure (which I have no objection too)! In the meantime, she's told me I should not go on HRT as that will make the adenomyosis worse but if I don't go on HRT I have to suffer the hot flashes, the sleepless nights, the risks to bones (I've had rib fractures before). Anyone else with this condition?

Hi,

I’ve got this condition and developed symptoms at the age of 19/20 which puts me in the minority as most women develop it in their 30s or 40s. They think I’ve had it seen my early teens. I was initially diagnosed with endometriosis during a laparoscopy after suffering for over a decade and when I moved to a specialist as suffering from adenomyosis. By this time I’d suffered for 15 years with no diagnosis. I’m not sure on your age but some women get great benefit from the mirena or if you’d prefer then the implanon (but this has greater risk side effects. I’ve tried both of these twice as well as the pill in various forms. I’m now on long term Zoladex which they usually won’t allow unless you’ve failed all previously tried treatments. I’ve had to go on HRT but they can prescribe Livial which I’m on and is especially for those suffering from endometriosis and adenomyosis. Unlike other HRT it doesn’t actually contain hormones but the building blocks that the body uses to make a small amount of hormones. I’ve done extremely well with this form of HRT. So you could ask your specialist or GP to try this. You might find it takes your body longer to be responsive to the drug seeing that it doesn’t contain actual hormones but it’s worth a try.
