Hi kalecolbe,

I've had regular internal PT with an experienced, specialist physio. In the past 6 months or so there have been longer intervals between sessions as my pelvic pain has improved. If /when there are local trigger points or referred pain the treatment itself is /can be painful. The pain should not continue for a long time after the session, rather it should be reduced by the treatment - gradually over time. So like the whole business it all needs patience. If you have confidence in your physio, this could well be one way of moving forward - in my opinion and experience!

When I first saw my PT I had severe pain and muscle spasm if anything was inserted vaginally. She took me through a programme of desensitisation using graded dilators. You start by inserting the smallest one just for a few seconds, then when you can tolerate that gradually work up to larger ones. She didn't do internal work until I could tolerate insertion without my muscles going into spasm and/or severe soreness. I think it took a couple of months, and yes, it was painful at first.
