Recently Diagnosed but confused...

Hi all, I was recently diagnosed (blindsided) with PBC after routine blood work.

I went in for a biopsy last week to find out what stage and the ultrasound technician commented that my liver looked "green and coarse". I haven't gotten my results back because of the holiday.

I googled and it appears that 'green and coarse' may mean I have a fatty liver. If that is the case, I have no idea how/what I am supposed to do to help my liver :(

I am 43, have 4 kids that are grown, I have other autoimmune diseases and so I have been eating healthy for years. I am already lean, lead an active lifestyle and my cholesterol and other bloodwork is perfect. Yet somehow my liver is shite!!!

I have developed severe fatigue, stomach aches, can't hardly eat without getting sick now...I don't know what lifestyle changes there are left to make :(

Does anyone know what she meant by green and coarse?

I would not panic, wait to talk to the doctor try to call them tomorrow. She should not have commented on what she saw thats not allowed at all. It could mean anything as she is not certified to diagnose or comment only the doctor who ordered it, stay calm and ask your doctor. Good luck let me know what they say and hang in there .

Thanks Michiganpbc, I am not panicked, just curious if anyone knows what that means. Unfortunately, my doctors office is closed this week so calling them will have to wait until next Tuesday.

I agree she should not have commented. I mentioned that I was thankful my previous ultrasound results the week before came back normal. That's when she made the comment...then the doc came in to explain the procedure, then I was out with no chance to ask questions.

Even though the GI told me to keep doing what I am doing and moderation when it comes to drinking, I tried drinking a glass of wine and felt miserable with stomach pains for two days. I tried again a week later and same thing happened. If I even try to eat anything with the smallest amount of sugar, like a small piece of chocolate, I get terrible stomach pains. Something is going on or has changed for the worst in the last month. I mean no chocolate EVER??? That might make me panic 😂

Sorry you have to wait to talk to the doctor, and chocolate does give me a upset belly. I was told no alcohol ever as the liver is already struggling to perform its job so i gave up my one glass of wine everyday with dinner. If you notice something makes you feel sick keep a diary to refer to so you can know what to avoid, i have a hard time with red meat. And anything fatty or fried i get sick.

It totally suuuucks!! Lol, I am still in shock I guess. I can do this...I guess I have to. After I had my gallbladder out 22 years ago(wow) I used to get sick like this until I lost weight and got healthy. I guess I have to step it up to another level now :( bean sprout brownies it is I guess... bleh. 🙄😂

I will admit I may be going through a bit of denial and perhaps I get a bit pouty at the idea of giving up chocolate AND wine but my body seems to be saying no to both.

Thank you for your reply.

I cant praise Dr. Sandra Cabot enough, the Australian liver doctor as she is known. She has a fantastic website and her nutritionist will email answers to questions. She has a range of books with her liver diet in them. Before I was diagnosed I would go on her diet and my enzymes came down - Baffling my doctor! I still refer to her books. She is on fb and there are lots of utube sessions with her. Big Hug to you All, Kandiepat
