High Eosinophils

I'd be interested to hear if others that have been diagnosed with autoimmune gastritis/PA and/or Hashimoto's Thyroiditis have consistently higher than normal Eosinophils in their blood test results. Just curious.

Hi Rexz, i have the opposite, periodically slightly elevated neurophils & suppressed eosinophils. Can't make heads or tales of it.

Glad you're back & you're improving!

Mine tend to be low, not high.

Hi Rexz. How high is your eosinophilia?

I noted by chance [through working in it] that I had a moderate eosinophilia for a while, and then... Acute Appendicitis struck me! I'm not suggesting anything here, but the eosinophilia resolved after surgery. Most of the time we have no idea what's going on unless we just happen to test something. But they're pretty cells down the microscope!

Pretty Cells? why of course they'd be pretty as my Eosinophils must be reflective of me! 🤣

My eosinophils have been moderately high since I was diagnosed with PA in 2020 so not sure what is causing it. My Eosinophils (EOS Absolute) have consistently fluctuated between 0.7 and 0.9 x10E3/uL for the last four years so it's something chronic and underlying. Doctors don't know what it causing it. Normal range for the US Lab I use is 0.0 to 0.4 x10E3/uL.

Best I can tell is these are the white blood cells that respond to allergens, parasites, and "type 2" inflammation. I've been tested and negative for parasites.

I don't seem to have allergy symptoms so I was just wondering since Autoimmune Gastritis(AIG)/PA is certainly chronic inflammation if that is a "type 2" inflammation, whatever that is? So appendicitis must be a "type 2" inflammation then.

Thanks for your help, interesting. Rexz

It's all the bad RX drugs messing you up. Unless you don't take any RX drugs, but if you do!

Thank you. I had not thought about Rx drugs as a possibility. However, I only take my Thyroid meds for Hashimoto's and those were started after my high eosinophil count showed up.

Hi,

Just curious as to whether you've ever been checked for internal parasites eg fish tapeworm.

High levels of eosinophils can be associated with internal parasites.

There are other parasites besides fish tapeworm that can lead to B12 deficiency eg Giardia Lamblia, other types of parasitic worms.

Found some interesting articles when I searched online for "parasites B12 deficiency".

Yes, Sleepybunny, That's a great point as eosinophils are the white blood cells that respond to allergens, parasites, and can be associated with type two inflammation. My curiosity is with the inflammation and that maybe the chronic inflammation of autoimmune Gastritis could be a cause. But does not seem like others with PA have this similar elevated eosinophil count.

Yes, I’ve been tested multiple times for 31 different parasites that included negative for

5 types of Roundworms

Hookworms

5 types of Tapeworms

5 types of Flukes

15 types of Protozoa of which one is Giardia.

There is another one of which I forget the name of it that lives on the walls of the small intestine and therefore doesn’t necessarily show up in stool samples. I am taking some medication for 1 month that will cause them to release themselves so at the end of the 30 days I’ll be tested again when they would show up. That’s if they’re there.

Thank you for your response. Rexz

I'll be intrigued to know if your eosinophilia improves after the course of medication.

I remember reading a thread years ago by someone who was diagnosed with PA and turned out to have a large tapeworm inside....if only their doctor had considered the possibility of a parasite earlier.

At least your doctors are considering the possibility of parasites.

B12 deficiency is a neglected area of medicine and parasites as a potential cause of B12 deficiency I suspect is not given the attention it deserves.

I'm assuming you've seen a specialist in tropical medicine.

I think in UK, people with suspected unusual parasites might be referred to the London School of Health and Tropical Medicine.

Yeah, my Doctor treating me, or trying to rule out parasites is a Naturopathic Medicine Doctor or ND. The last parasite that hasn't been ruled out is one of the most difficult to find as it seems to hide in the walls of the small intestine so if it's there we're drawing it out with some supplements. I don't think we'll find that but at least she's being very thorough. So allergies and parasites might be ruled out which I think only leaves some type of Type 2 Inflammation. I did go hiking through the Amazon Rainforest last October in northeastern Peru but the higher eosinophils were on my blood tests at least 2 years prior to that.

It's still a big ??? Maybe I'll just have to learn to love my Eosinophils just as much as I love my PA!!! 🤣

If I find something I'll let you know.
