I know deficiency can cause a chronic cough

But can it also affect the heart? And can it cause a cough that’s there only when u lie down on the left side? Could it perhaps have damaged lungs or the heart before the person gets a chance to start on injections?

My daughter had macrocytic anaemia associated with b12 deficiency Her heart was monitored.

She had inflammation and heart palpitations

Her autonomic function damaged by a late diagnosis and treatment.

So in short yes, it can affect your heart.

I thought the anemia goes away with treatment… it should really

I developed a cough it turned out to be caused by a hiatus hernia and it is worse when I lie down, I would go and see the GP about it as its always worth getting checked out.Merry Christmas

Thank u for replying so helpfully. Is it when u lie down on any side? Why did the hernia cause the cough?

Its not the hernia that causes the cough, the hernia causes reflux which contains acid which then irratates and causes the cough (if i have remembered correctly) I am not a medical person😀

Yes , it can affect the heart . Until i could get sufficient treatment ( i.e.self injecting ) I used to have palpitations , which were quite frightening .Sometimes i would faint ! But my GP said there was nothing wrong with me , and that I should ignore them , which i did . Now i get sufficient treatment -1 injection a week, no more palpitations .

Thank u for your kindness. Yes I’m sure with treatment it should go away. So I’m baffled at why after treatment cough my brain still there. Thanks

I had a chronic cough for years - esp worse at night. I had respiratory issues along with b12 deficiency. I and my doctors assumed the cough was respiratory related even though no treatments worked. Almost 12 years later, the cough disappeared overnight after restarting b12 injections. It is possible to have silent reflux which also causes coughing that is worse at night. I also has irregular heart beat issues & chest pain that stopped with b12. Conversely, it seems if I load b12 too quickly, I also get chest pain and tightness. I don’t know if it is from a sudden increase in platelet count, or a reaction to the natrium (sodium) additive in the solution, or something else. I am going to have a cardio workup to be safe. Wishing you luck.

Thank u sooo much! Hmm yes it seems it’s strange it’s only here when I’m on the left side.

B12 is definitely associated with heart palpitations, as people have said but I'm not so sure about them being worse when lying on your left side - they tend to be more "at any time".

My manky pancreas doesn't like me lying on my left and I have had to lie on my right side for many years now, despite my left being my childhood choice. It's not a fan of me lying on my back either - if I lie on my right it helps it drain.

Curiously my heart arrhythmia is much worse if I lie on my right, likes being on my back and is not good but is different if I'm on my left! So some nights I have to choose which one is going to keep me awake! 🙄😃 (Or I play devil's advocate and lie on my left for a bit just so that everything feels so much better by comparison when I turn over again! 😁).

It definitely shows that our physiology is affected by which side we lie on and so if it is producing symptoms it is definitely worth being checked out, if nothing more than to rule out any problems.
