Insomnia from b12 sublingual

Hello, 2 months back, I was diagnosed with low b12, I had anxiety attack, insomnia, extreme fatigue, numbness, tingling, muscle weakness as my symptoms. But unfortunately the ignorant Dr didn't check levels, directly gave 6 injection. Then my symptoms again came back, so I took 6 more weekly, then I improved a lot, my sleep came back, I was sleeping peacefully for 3 weeks, then again symptoms came back when I delayed my injection by 4 days. Now, I was tired of injections, so tried solgar 1000 mcg methylcobalamin sublingual. I took them for 5 days, on 6 th day, my muscle weakness improved again, my tiredness went away, I got very energetic, now I think I have overdosed on it, I have headache, nerves are over stimulated, I am restless and got insomnia.

Did someone got insomnia with frequent injection?? Did it go after stopping them?? Please help, I have also taken b complex daily along with the earlier injection and Sublingual. There was folic acid in it. My iron was 90 and folate 20 last month. Vit d levels also good, tsh also good.

Many people have an adverse reaction to Methylcobalamin that match some of your side effects. Try switching to high dose cyanocobalamin. It should be just as effective and you will absorb as much from an oral dose as from sublingual.

But I took weekly methylcobalamin tablets for 2 months and I had taken 13 methylcobalamin injections in last 2.5 months, I was always good, no mood problem, no anxiety, in fact on injection , my sleep came back.

I tried methyl B-12 oral supplements twice and each time they caused anxiety, insomnia, and agitation. I threw out the pills. I'll never take it again.

So, in how many days your anxiety went away?? I am on anxiety pills by my Dr.

I only took one each time and the worst of the anxiety was over within 24 hours.

Methylcobalamin is stimulating so take it in the morning or switch to hydroxocobalamin

Eat protein and carbs 3 hours before bed and switch off any blue light.

Try taking magnesium citrate or have an epsom salt bath before bed. Magnesium calms the nervous system

Also folic acid or folate is good for anxiety and if you are on B12 then it works with folate so good to balance it out. I take 400 mcg folic acid and it takes the worst off my negative thoughts

Yes, I also take 400 mcg folic acid daily. But I think I took too much methylcobalamin at once. Seems like some imbalance of b vitamins.

Sagandeep. Just briefly...20 is the highest recordable level for folate, so your folate level may be significantly higher than that.

Don't know if you are aware but over-supplementation with folate can cause insomnia, anxiety, and a whole host of other side effects. In addition, research suggests that long-term over-supplementation with folic acid can be detrimental and dangerous to health (i.e. can cause potentially irreversible neurological problems et al).

Suggest you stop folic acid supplements and see if that improves your symptoms. And perhaps get your folate levels checked again in a few months? Some people do not need to supplement with folic acid - you may be one of those people. And certainly, with folate levels that high, it’s inadvisable to take further supplements.

Thanks, yes few days back, I showed my folate results to my Dr friend, she was also surprised that these levels are very good. Yes I have stoped supplementing for a while.

Ah ha...be interested to see if stopping supplements brings some symptom relief.

I know that in the initial stages of deficiency, I inadvertently over-supplemented with folic acid. It made me feel terrible (insomnia and jitters for starters) and those symptoms did resolve quite quickly once I stopped the folic acid.

Good luck
