Hi I have p.a and have such gut issues because of that and previous hpylori infections.Ive tried many things to help but usually don’t have much success with anything as my reactions to them are never kind.I darent go near probiotics and symprove was awful gave me such tummy pain but I’m lactose intolerant so that doesent help.Does anyone here use sauerkraut to aid the gut biome.Ive been trying just a teaspoon once a day of raw organic sauerkraut, the red one,and honestly I could give any set of bagpipes a run for its money, the noise and air coming out me is shocking lol.its also painful my right rib pain is back with a vengeance and the only thing that gives me any relief is Rennies deflatine. What I’m hoping for is someone to say yes same here at first but it settles down after x time,a bit like the effects of the b12 when we first start it,gets worse before it gets better!

Any advice please guys? X

Well lactose can’t be the reason for Sympove disagreeing with you , as it doesn’t contain lactose . I also have diagnosed P.A., and that condition means that one has low or no stomach acid. ( . Hypochlorhydria/ Achlorhydria ) This does cause gut problems , and it’s then good to try to to acidify the stomach, because low acidity means that bad bacteria can thrive in such an environment , causing your mentioned symptoms . . I would look up a diet for Achloryhdria. But the trouble is that your gut has already taken a beating with having coped with Helicobacter Pylori . I would be inclined to consult a nutritionist , but not before finding out if they have a good understanding of Pernicious Anaemia and how the gut is affected by low acidity and the fact that you have had Helicobacter Pylori and all that that entails.

I’m sorry that I can’t be of any real help . I hope someone else can be . Best wishes .

Yes , I’m a great advocate of. Organic, RAW ( should not be cooked / heated ) sauerkraut for its gut healing properties . But you mention that it doesn’t suit you . I make my own when I’m not in a lazy mood . I make it from red cabbage , not white , because it has more nutritional value than white. But I know that sauerkraut is very much an acquired taste ! But it is at least a natural remedy . Perhaps you need to persevere , so your gut can very gradually put get used to something that it’s not accustomed to .

Kimchi which is a fermented mixed vegetable perparation , is a possibility for you . Not cheap to buy, but cheap if you D.I.Y.

Hi all thank you for your advice It’s always appreciated.

I’ll try another couple of days with the sauerkraut but the trapped wind is awful sore on my ribs so if I don’t get any reduction in the pain I know I won’t last it out and will quit taking that too.

That was my third bout of HPylori over the years and this time was really difficult to to get rid of so I expect my poor guts in a bad way although I must admit since starting my b12/ vitamin regime my food allergies or intolerances have improved somewhat and I can actually eat out again ,it’s been such a long time since I was able to do that.

Back to researching again,it’s good to try a variety of things I don’t mind that at all I just hate pain lol.many thanks again.x

Hello Thrones,

May i suggest another possible solution to your stomach problem, namely kefir. It is cheap, powerful and has solved my own issues, which were similar to yours. It used to be hard to find but now you can get it in any Polish food shop, which are ubiquitous these days. Good luck!

Hi Thrones,

I'm not an expert in anything! But thought it may help to share my recent digestive issues in case it helps you...

Over the last few years I've started to react to different sweetners. Not sure why? But it happens very quickly, digestive issues and vomiting. I won't go into more detail but it's very painful and unpleasant! The worst reaction I had was to erythritol (a sugar alcohol) that was in some biscuits that I'd eaten; felt like I'd been drugged and was very sick! I've never taken Symprove but it could possibly be the sucralose in Symprove that's causing you problems?

Also I have a sensitivity to sulphites which can cause a variety of symptoms depending on how much of the particular food I eat. I can get very wheezy for example or severe and urgent digestive issues. Typically it's foods that I really like that cause me issues...fermented foods being an example! If I eat sauerkraut or kimchi I get bad stomach pains and extreme wind...

The ones I'd eaten were shop bought but expensive ones so not sure if I'd react the same if I made my own?

As I said I'm not an expert but these are my experiences.

Take care.

Hi Hedgeree thanks so much for that info it’s funny because I was worried that my HPylori was flaring up again because I had that familiar big knot in tummy every day and terrible bloating and gas and the sauerkraut really hurt me when I tried that but you’ve made me realise that I’ve just changed to sweetener tabs as my professor said I was pre diabetic and had to really get some weight off and that is s probably the source of my issues I just didn’t twig till I read your post.Ive been suffering bad bouts of nausea again really early like 5am probably because I’ve been having a cuppa ,peppermint tea,but putting the sweeteners in it,

Your a genius lol thanks so much for that your probably spot on I’ll quit the sweetners today,I’m just getting ready to go for my dexa scan later and I was dreading it because it’s like a full blown orchestra when I bend or lift my leg so embarrassing so I’ll be taking my wind busters before I go and crossing my fingers lol.

Many thanks for the words of wisdom and big hug xx

Hi Thrones,

I'm sorry but when I read your reply I couldn't stop laughing....I can really relate to what you said ...'it's like a full blown orchestra when I bend or lift my leg so embarassing'...

Get it all out before you go to your scan! Hope your digestive issues settle soon; I know how uncomfortable that can be...

Good luck x

Enjoy your day Hedgeree and thank you again x

The reaction you are experiencing could be due to die off from bad bacteria. Eating raw organic foods such as sauerkraut or taking probiotics means filling your gut with commensal organisms which 'crowd out' bad bacteria - effectively killing them off. When bacteria die in this way they emit toxins and effect can be pretty painful. If you have ever taken ant fungal you may have experienced this. I use raw organic foods and in the beginning I had lots of pain and wind (and awful smells) - sorry to be detailed but in case you are wondering. I would be tempted to stick with it and see if it improves. Carbohydrates present real problems for the gut especially if you have low stomach acid it seems which is why I keep my carb intake low. Raw organic foods ferment most of the carbs first so the food consumed is low carb so you should, I say should, be able to tolerate it aasuming nothing else is going on. Good luck.

Yes your right Martin even my cats are pretty disgusted with me just now lol.

It’s not that I don’t like the sauerkraut or kefir etc but my gut reacts so badly it’s really painful like a knife in my ribs too and that big burning knot in my tummy,I thought I’d solved all that when I had the last two lots of triple therapy and my breath test showed all clear but obviously my poor gut has taken a hammering.ok so back to the drawing board for me and thank you all for the advice it’s much appreciated x

You’re welcome. I really struggle with gut issues too. Have you had a test for SIBO? SIBO can mimic other gastrointestinal complaints according to my gastroenterologist. I hope you get some relief. I’m struggling right now too and not sure what’s causing it!!

in reply to

Hi Martin sorry t hear your still having gut issues it’s so unpleasant I know.

I had a number of tests done stool testin* too and nothing showed except the HPylori ,I assume they tested for sibo but knowing the nhs probably not.

At the moment I’m having issues with kidney stones and my lovely professor has just emailed me saying he will chase the gp again and get the testing he requested previously actioned as it’s really important,I had to end up paying today to have a dexa scan done privately as gp did a deaffie on consultants requests.I just have so many health issues going on that I’m trying to deal with and knock off the list it’s so hard.

Thank you again for taking the time to advise it’s very much appreciated.X

Yes they tested for SIBO and it was methane positive and being treated for that. There’s a reluctance right now to do investigations because of COVID. I’m cynical and feel it’s about cost cutting. I know what you mean about multiple issues. I have EPI so my digestion really is tricky. Keep at it. I’m sure you will get there

Gosh you do have it rough Martin,I can see why it’s a battle for you too. I really feel if your guts not right nothings right,

you are right to be cynical, despite my consultant saying it was urgent I have an sst test done because of my cortisol levels my gp did a deafie on that too using lockdown as an excuse but I was able to get it done by paying private, all of this Covid stuff is just an excuse to trim everyone’s budget I’m so sick of it too,the people who most need that help are just not getting it and people like me are raiding our savings for our old age to try and get help from the same bloody people who can’t risk themselves for the nhs but can for private practice,it’s criminal.

Rant over it’s been a long hard day today lol,I’ve had no sweetners in my tea today night so it’ll be interesting to see if my sore windy gut eases up and hopefully no nausea in the morning, fingers crossed lol take care x
