How long before a 2 course meal does everyone take their Creon ?
Creon: How long before a 2 course meal... - Chronic Pancreati...
Creon
Usually immediately before every meal. Maximum delay 10 minutes.
Thank you, that is what I do but when I was in hospital they said 15-20 minutes before so just wondered what others had been advised
it just goes to show the difference in advice given by hospitals. I was given a random 12 minutes maximum. After taking Creon for around 5 years, I’ve found that so long as I remember to take them then I’m fine.
Pancreatic enzymes are meant to mimic what your pancreas would normally do; in a normally functioning pancreas, it would only begin secreting enzymes once food has hit your stomach, to help you digest it. We recommend taking it with the first bite of your food, so they function as similarly as possible to native enzymes. I'm surprised the hospital recommended that early before a meal!
Wish I could take them as I have no treatment. Reason is they contain pork and I'm allergic to it
regrettably there is currently no substitute.
How do you manage?
I know and I'm gutted. I manage by a low fat diet,no lactose, multi vitamins and pro biotics also loads of immoduim Thankfully I've not lost weight
that sounds horrendous.
I’ve got so confused as I have to look after my pancreas, then there is the diabetes and recently wheat intolerance which I discovered for myself. Then every time I have a medical I’m told my cholesterol is too high. I can’t take statins of any brand, side effect for me is I lose my memory. I’ve had high cholesterol for 30 years and I’m still here.
Knowing what immodium is for, have you looked into wheat intolerance? I had really bad diarrhoea for over 6 months then purely by accident I didn’t eat bread for a couple of days and it cleared up. I can eat sourdough bread.
Hi Readingagatha 👋 We have a helpful video on dosing and timing pancreatic enzymes: mission-cure.org/dosing-pan...
Generally, you should take Creon with the first bite of your meal. If it's a particularly large or fatty meal, it may be helpful to spread out taking your enzymes throughout.
I take my Creon as I eat. It depends on whether I’m having a dessert (I do try to be good but am not always successful…). If I am, I’ll save 1 tab to take with my dessert.
