I want to let you know when I was put on a statins earlier in the day before I was walking pretty good but once I had one does of the statin I was having difficulty walking. Now that could be only me but I would rather stay away from them.

I've been recently put on statins as my cholesterol level has shot up from 4.1 to 7.6 in the last year since I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes what sort of side effects do these have as my nurse or doctor haven't told me nothing about them and I do wonder what sort of harm these can do over a period of time and I don't think I'll be coming off these anytime soon .thanks x

Iv heard a lot of bad things about statins my boyfriend got them years ago and had to stop taking them i cant remember why. i will put a link here about side effects of statins. The best thing to help you is to take care of your diabetes and you diet and exercise as there is so much that we can do for ourself. Iv heard of many people coming of the diabeties medication on this forum because they changed thier diet and lifestyle. nhs.uk/conditions/statins/s... wishing you well. love grace xoxo

Statins are taking by huge numbers of people who have absolutely no side effects at all. Not everyone gets side effects from their medications but virtually all medications have side effects for some.

Sorry I was writing to you and it kept going off and I lost what I wrote . Anyway I took them for years and a cardiologist said I was sensitive to statins and they were makinge sick. So know it can cause serious damage to your body so be leery of them. Love susiejo 1948

Have to have them but it adds to my muscle pain. A few I took had me barely able to walk. If I could do without them I would.

Thanks Daisychain12 could you please confirm which bit of the site I am looking at?. I'm not diabetic and unfortunately I have the the familial type of high chlorestrol so at the time of being diagnosed I was eating healthily, swimming 75 lengths a week and walking about an hour a day but still my chlorestrol was 9.4. my GP said it was unfortunate but with that type exercise and diet only has a small effect. I was on my 4th different tablet before I found one that didn't have those absolutely horrendous side effects. This one gave me Mike leg ache. Unfortunately, I now have Fibromyalgia and muscle aches can be one of the main symptoms.x

If you haven't started them yet you could try eating porridge with added fine oat bran every morning.

That's how my cholesterol came down.

If you have started them and you are having side effects eg painful legs , then ask your GP to try a different one.

Keep going back to GP till you get one that you feel ok with.

There is a lot of controversy regarding statins. They are heavily pushed by the drugs companies as they are one of their most profitable products. However, the link between cholesterol and heart disease is far from proven and many, if not most, people who have heart attacks have normal cholesterol levels. It's something you really need to look into. Despite being in my fifties there is no way I would take statins without seeing very good evidence from reputable studies to show that I really needed them. Too often these studies take a small cohort and show a tiny benefit which is irrelevant in real terms but then this is pushed out to a much wider group than needs it.

Completely agree with you, I wouldnt touch them with a barge pole. My husband took them only a few weeks as he got muscle pains in his legs and stopped them immediately and pains went away, doc still trying to push them on him though. Read somewhere that most people who live longer lives have high cholesterol and that brain is mostly cholesterol and needs it to keep healthy. As you say there is very little evidence to support the link between cholesterol and heart attacks, though lots die every year from side effects of prescribed medicine!
