From what I know, Gabapentin (also an anti-epileptic) works directly on the nerves, & therefore reduces pain. The Tramadol & Oxy you mention are opioid salts & works on the neuro transmitters in the brain, reducing pain. However, they are addictive & have more side effects than Gabapentin, which is increasingly the drug of choice for pain relief. Hope that helps a little,
Kind regards

Hi Craig.
Thank you for replying & things are a lot clearer now as I said I'm cutting back on oxynorm slowly & safely it's hard but I will do it once again thank you.
Warm regardsPeggy ☘
Just a word...gabapentin and its sister pregabalin get more questions about their effect than almost any other subject.
Both have side effects and they are often known as the marmite drug. They either love YOU or loathe YOU.
They have to be started very low dose and increased under medical giudance and decreased just as slowly. And I do mean slowly.

Thank you Paton.
I'm grateful for any advice I can get I don't understand why my GP ever put me on oxynorm & now a low dose of tramadol 50mg. X3 daily for now !! The oxynorm is horrendous to come off & having being an Valium addict in the 70s I'm dreading it ....but really want to do it it seems so unfair with all my other ailments to contend with, I'm 78 & it's just draining .once again thank you .

Always happy to helpof at all possible. GPs usually take advice from the pain consultant as to what meds he wants you on. Have you see a consultant?
My David has been on Oxycontin with Oxynorm for nreakthrough pain but due to some nasty side effects decided to come off. Both GP and consultant said...cold turkey which was appalling. He decided to saty put and sorted out side effects.

Hello Peggy, I put myself back on Tramadol as I couldn't cope with the side effects of Gabapentin or the weight gaining, a lot, on Pregabalin but everyone is different as we know. The most important thing about Gabapentin is to come off very, very , very slowly as the experience can be horrible to say the least. I wish you luck.

Hi nodmeister .
Thank you for replying & information about tramadol as I said to Paton I have so many issues and it is all getting me down & at my age I would love to be in control I'm not feeling sorry for myself ,just sad I have gained such a lot from this forum. Once again thank you .

Hi Dan....... You are right I know I'm 78 & have so many medical issues such as heart failure & cronic kidney disease of 23 creatine and osteoporosis /arithtis & anemia which are affected by certain medications personally I would like to stay at what I am taking the cardiologist & kidney specialist seem OK about but the GP does not agree & he gives my scrips ( money saving) I think . Once again thank you for replying .

Hi Peggy, listen to your specialists, they are treating your health problems and GP should be supporting their recommendations. Don't be bullied into stopping meds that could be giving you relief, the only time you should consider change is when they are no longer working for you.
Stay strong and keep as well as you can

Hi sherly.
You are right of course & I agree with you wil try & be more assertive with my GP I know I will not be able to handle all the pain without oxynorm or the equivalent ? So once again thank you kind lady ,keep well & safe .

Hi Dan.
Thanks for the advice which I agree with ( not feeling sorry for myself) but at my age & all the issues I have I feel pressured & very sad As I think Dr. Trying to score points / save money for practice ,GP I was with for over 30years went private . ,& feel the new practice don't really know me !! My body is like 90 year old but mentally maybe 50 I'm very alert at least that's what everyone tells me ,so will try being assertive with GP .oce again thank you .
Warm regards.

Gabatine is an antidepressant used in small doses to suppress nerve pain.
The other two are Opiate type pain medications
