Hi Shirley

Sorry that you are going through this.

I'm sorry but I don't know of anybody in this situation. My consultant is adamant that there is no link, but I know that other people may disagree.

Do you have a specialist nurse who can help? Also have you considered calling the ovacome nurse who is extremely knowledgeable ?

Take care

Lots of love

Hi Shirley

I had early stage breast cancer in 2010 and was diagnosed with Ovarian cancer this February. My oncologist says she may do some genetic testing on me later on.

Best wishes

Dear Monique It seems a good idea to have genetic testing if you develop both breast and ovarian cancers, or if like me, you have a close relative with one or both. I understand there may be different treatments for people who are BRAC1 or 2 positive and if this is the case PARP inhibitors can be used as part of the treatment which work very well for some.

Just thought I'd mention this as I wondered why anyone would put off having some genetic testing done. My oncologist didn't suggest it. My daughter prompted it after a visit to her GP and it just involved a 30 minute meeting with the genetic counsellor and yet another blood test. We went together to discuss what we wanted from the testing. The genetic counsellor said that some people feel guilty if they are carriers or ar BRAC positive. I couldn't imagine having any such feelings. Our results should be available soon. One daughter who hasn't yet had children said she would welcome the results as she would bring forward plans to have a family, and both would opt for a hysterectomy if they were at risk of developing the disease.

Hope this is helpful.

xx Annie

Thanks Annie, it is very helpful and I shall ask my oncologist about it next time I see her.

Hi Shirley,

There absolutely is a link.

I had breast cancer in 1999 and now have ovarian cancer. I have a faulty gene, BRCA1, which can cause both cancers. Carriers have a 60-80% chance of developing breast cancer and a 20% chance of developing ovarian cancer.

There may be other links, but that is the one I know about.

Hope this helps and good luck.

Sue

Hi Shirley,

I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1996 and have had several relapses since with remissions lasting approx. 3 years. In 2007 I also developed breast cancer and tested positive as a BRACA 1 carrier. This information was passed to relevant members of my family, some of whom have gone forward with genetic counselling and testing.

With best wishes, Sue.
