Hi Newlife,

You can always ask your GP to refer you for a second opinion. Ring ovacome and they will tell you the top ovarian oncologists in the UK or the best person locally. The trouble is you want to act quickly to avoid delaying treatment.

The norm for most of us is 6 cycles of carboplatin/taxol.

Hi Newlife

Great that you've found us, a lovely supportive group of women. Not great what you're probably fearing and thinking, I'm guessing?

I agree with Lizzie, the number is 0845 371 0554. You can leave a message and they work 10 to 5, Monday to Friday. The helpline is staffed by nurses who have loads of experience of OC. They will help you make sense of treatment options, may help you if you want advice about treatment options and current trials running in different parts of the country.

Good luck and keep us informed about how you're getting on

You should be given information about what chemo is on offer to you and why before you start treatment. You should also be allocated a Nurse Specialist to answer all the questions you inevitably want answered. Also, as the others have said, there is information from Ovacome. If your cancer is the more usual type the standard treatment is Carboplatin and Taxol in combination. I refused the Taxol as a friend had been left with problems from it, and my oncologist was happy to go with just carboplatin (which does most of the job in the combination).

It sounds as if your cancer was found as a result of hysterectomy for another reason, so it'll be necessary to ascertain (by scans) what stage, type and extent is left, and whether further surgery will be advised.

Whatever the situation; don't despair - it's a select club that no one wants to join - but it is something you can get through. We will all share our experiences with you - and you with us, I hope.

Very best wishes,

Isadora.

Hello there, I have the brca 1 gene and after breast cancer in both breasts 8 yrs ago I elected to undergo a complete hysterectomy, my health was fab for 3yrs until last summer when I too was diagnosed with the dreaded oc. I too am confused as I thought the whole purpose of haveing the hysterectomy was to prevent my cancer returning. I underwent carbo/taxol to which I am resistant and I am waiting to start a trial to see if it can help fellow sufferers like myself. I am a great believer of the power of the mind and although there are times when I feel there is nowhere to turn as I am sure even women who are healthy feel from time to time I do believe my cup is half full not empty. I wish you all the luck in the world and I hope you make a full recovery.
