Need some tips ladies.....I am one who was healthy and regular with my aerobic classes . But after this OC and all the treatments I rarely even walk around . Just googled up today abt ovarian cancer and the statistics puts me on distress ( cursing myself now ) it's also mentioned that when you workout the body responds well . Is it true ?

HiThere's some evidence around which supports exercise as being beneficial both pre operatively and during treatment for cancer.

I'm also aware of further work looking at the benefits of exercise whilst actually receiving chemotherapy.

'5k Your Way ' ( 5kyourway.org) promote have teamed up with local parkruns to promote exercise for those with a cancer diagnosis .

Hi kj, I think it's really important to listen to your body. I used to run, and I also have a dog who I used to walk a few miles every day. During treatment I was lucky enough to have someone to give him a good walk in the morning for me and I would walk him for 5 minutes round the block in the afternoon. I'm on maintenance treatment now which makes me tired, and I just walk as far as I can each day (which is usually only about one mile each day). I'd love to take up running again (if only to try and shift this weight round my middle since my op!) but just the thought of it is exhausting at the moment!

Exercise is beneficial to our bodies in all sorts of ways but you can only do what you can do and your body will tell you what that limit is. Perhaps you could start trying to increase your exercise a little every day and see how you get on? Xx

I found exercise really helpful, but rather tha set a target, it was more about doing what I felt able to do on the day depending on treatment and energy levels. Ovacome offer a Gentle Strengthening Exercise class online on a Tuesday.

Hi Kjhere,

Some of our members have already posted some helpful responses here. Kjpip mentioned listening to your body, which is great advice. If you feel up to it, some gentle exercise can certainly be of benefit both physically and mentally.

Morini mentioned our gentle strengthening exercise class which we hold online every Tuesday. These are delivered by Sarah Russell, who is a clinical exercise and Pilates specialist for people with cancer. The sessions are carefully designed to cater for different needs and fitness levels. If you would be interested in joining this session, please find more information (including how to sign up) here: ovacome.org.uk/event/exerci....

We also run a 7-week yoga course, which is again very suitable for beginners and focuses on mindfulness, breathwork and slowly mobilising the body. This class takes place online every Thursday. The next course begins on 14th September. To find out more, please follow this link: ovacome.org.uk/Event/7-week....

Best wishes,

Alice - Ovacome Support

Hi Kjhere.

I'm in a similar situation to you. My pre diagnosis exercise included lots of hill walking. After my 1st line treatment, I did get back to that, albeit slowly.

However after more surgery and 2nd line treatment 5 years later, I've really struggled with exertion of any kind. I've realised that I have a new baseline, which is very different from the old one.

My exercise has had to change accordingly. I now do Yoga / Plates type classes focusing on low impact strength building exercises., and that's also great for relaxation.

I've bought an electric bike which lets me go further for a fraction of the energy needed on my old bike and I don't come home exhausted from a ride!

Acceptance was hard, but I'm getting there, so please don't give up and try lots of new things till you find one that suits you.

Good luck.
