Reflux on carbo/gem

I've had 3 carbo/gem infusions so far. I have reoccurring ascites which is drained roughly every 3 weeks. Since I started the carbo/gem I am really struggling with reflux, so much so that it's stopping me drinking and eating properly because roughly an hour after I eat I am regularly sick. This only happens because the reflux causes me to cough and then the inevitable happens.

I'm trying to eat smaller meals to see if it helps and I have been medication to take.

Anyone else had this reaction on carbo/gem?

Hi, So sorry you are suffering like this. I had reflux when I had carbo/ taxol and was prescribed Omeprazole 20mg by my Oncologist. This worked very well, and you only take one each day. I did ask the question "will i be able to come off of these when chemo finishes". The answer was yes and I have never taken them since. It would be a good idea to speak with your team or Macmillan nurse. I hope that you get this sorted quickly as you should not have to put up with it.

If you're already taking Omeprazole or a similar drug, ask for Famotidine instead - it cuts stomach acid but works in a different way from the 'prazole' type drugs. I find omeprazole and the like don't work at all for me, in fact they seem to give me heartburn, so I have Famotidine instead (now that ranitidine has been withdrawn) - it works for 12 hours, so you may need it twice a day.

you could try gaviscon as well. I used omeprazole and gaviscon as advised by my team and it did seem to help.

Hi, sorry to hear you've been suffering with reflux and vomiting, it's really debilitating. Could it be related to the ascites too? Just a thought if you've not already asked your team about this.Really hope you get some relief soon. XX 🌹

I also had reflux and continuing nausea when on Carbo/ Caelyx treatment. Doctor said it was caused by steroids creating stomach acid. I was prescribed omeprazole and I was fine after taking that, only needed to take it when on steroids in the days following each treatment.
