Maybe lying down with a little bit of fluid makes breathing a little more difficult? She should still lie down! The doctors are aware and not worried about it so take heart. And they have a plan for your mum which will start soon.

Have you taken action about support for yourself?

maybe low iron which will show on blood tests. I am concerned for your mum but also you need support. Please find time to seek some support fir yourself as well as looking after mum.

iron and haemoglobin are the same, Ithink. Emma x But I am no doctor, so there are may be many causes of shortness of breath. Just keep telling the doctors.

I agree with the comments above.

It’s a worrying time for you and your mum but maybe think about some talking therapy for yourself.

You need to look after yourself or otherwise you will get sick and your mum wouldn’t want that.

Take care x

Hi,I'm sorry that your mom is having problems breathing! That can be scary! I have fluid in my chest cavity that's left over from cancer. Mine is outside of the lungs and doesn't cause shortness of breath. It sounds like your mom's is inside her lungs, but it is a small amount. I am a nurse as well as a cancer survivor, and I also have asthma, which causes shortness of breath at times. I use an inhaler for that.

Your mom's shortness of breath could be caused by something other than the fluid in her lungs. It could be anxiety, or caused by the hernia, if it's getting worse, It could be a different problem with her lungs (like mine is), or a heart problem. It would be a good idea for her to check these things with her regular doctor. They could do some imaging and testing to see if a medication might help her breathing. I hope that your mom is feeling better soon! Take care!
