Allergic to chemo - starting rucaparib

It’s a while since I’ve been here but this feels like the time to come back. My first recurrence happened earlier this year, so I started chemo with carbo & caelyx in April. Unfortunately it turns out I’m as allergic to the caelyx as I was to taxol, so by the time they’d sorted out the reaction there wasn’t enough of the day left to do the full treatment. I ended up with the full carbo but only around half the taxol.

Four weeks later I had the next round - all went more smoothly that time, although I felt a bit odd during the carbo so they slowed it down.

Round 3 I had a bad reaction to the carbo, so it was all stopped, and carbo desensitisation was planned for round 4. Sadly, despite large amounts of premeds, within moments of the carbo starting I had a huge reaction, so all stopped again.

The consultant then suggested stopping chemo for this time and going straight on to rucaparib, as we’d been planning to go onto a PARP inhibitor after chemo. This leaves us more options for the future, and should hopefully work well… so now I’m just waiting for all the hoops to be jumped through and to get the tablets. Blood test tomorrow, two phone appointments on Thursday (consultant, then specialist nurse practitioner or pharmacist).

Fingers crossed this one goes to plan and doesn’t have all the worst side effects!

I’ve been on Rucuparib for 2 months now following 1st recurrence, I wasn’t Ned after carbo/caelyx so hopefully it will keep my desease stable or even shrink it. So far nausea, heat sensitivity and sun a little! And constipation. Good luck on it x

I'm currently having same problem with carboplatin. OK on my 1st, 2nd bad reaction so stopped treatment, on 3rd they did it over 4 size bags 1mg, 10mg, 50mg, 535mg bags and slowed it down and I had a slight reaction to the 10mg bag but completed so decide for 4th to go same dosage..reacted to 10 mg bag so oncologist came see me and decided to slow it right down, completed 10mg bag but then I reacted on 55mg bag even though is had loads of premeds again so decided thwt my body has decide to be resilient to the carboplatin so abandoned any more treatment of it so now looking at other options. Got a call on Thurs so hopefully will know more what they are looking to do x

I had a first allergic reaction yesterday, so can really sympathise with you. Once was bad enough, and I thought I was going to die!I hope everything goes well with the Rucaparib.
