Update on my mum

Hi ladies,

I just wanted to give you a little update on the situation. My mum has found a lump in the lower right hand side of her groin. It’s not painful and she isn’t sure how long it has been there, so I mentioned it to the CNS nurse today and so she has made my mums 3 monthly appointment on the 16th July a face to face. Really quite happy about that. We have requested the doctor we like too, so hopefully we get to see her.

My mum feels well, but I know from reading this forum that it doesn’t mean all is ok. My mum doesn’t know this, sometimes less is more. I’m doing the research etc and I like that my mum is obvious to all this. She isn’t a stupid lady, far from it, but doesn’t google which is a good thing.

Her bloods are being repeated on the 13th so we will know more at the appointment. If they continue to go up I suspect they will order a scan.

My mum did have an ultrasound of her abdomen on Monday, and all looked ok. Her gp requested it because of the discomfort she has been having. Would this show anything sinister? Or does it have to be a ct scan?

I will keep you all updated. Thank you again for your guidance and advise. It really means the world to me. Xxx

I'm a 5yr survivor of Ovarian Cancer 3b. I discovered a rather large lump in my right groin (inguinal mode area in March. My CT scan and Ca-125 and blood tests are set for July 13th after Covid stopped my wanting to go anywhere near a hospital. I postponed twice and but need to go. Things have spiked here in my State in the US but I'm feeling fatigued and want to know what's going on. Please let us know what the Drs find after your Moms lump is checked out. My Dr isn't concerned but I am. All the best! Jill

Hi sendings hugs to you at this worrying time . I was diagnosed in 2017 with ppc after a large lymph node appeared in my left groin. Had biopsy and the usual chemo, surgery etc. In May 2019 a lymph node appeared in my right groin. Gradually got bigger the suze of a plum !! and in march this year i discussed with oncologist who told me radiotherapy would kill any cancer cells and shrink the node. (Did not really believe them and wanted it surgically removed) anyway had 5 sessions of radiotherapy and after 6 weeks it had shrunk!! Have got a scan July 20th to see what has happened to it. Stay positive and i will let you know the results of the scan. Xx

Hi, you may find the Ovacome freephone helpline 0800 008 7054 a reasurrance as you are doing the research for your Mum's OC; their information is all evidence-based and checked by their medical advisory board members. Ovacome is for all those affected by OC not just we patients.

After two surgeries for Stage 3c and removal of the lymph glands all down my left side, at times I've felt 'nodules/lumps' in my left groin which were/are just due to accummulations of lymph which couldn't drain away; my anxiety loomed large so I hope your Mum's has a non-OC reason too. Warm wishes, L x

Hi there. My experience may be of interest to you. Diagnosed 3c in Nov 2011. I had very few symptoms to lead to the diagnosis - the only 2 symptoms I was aware of were bloating & lumps in my left groin, which over a few weeks, gradually became uncomfortable & made walking long distances difficult (I had just done a 15km walk when it was just like little twitches in the area).

Anyway, moving along - operations & successful rounds of chemo & remission. Then 18 months later I found the little lumps in my groin again. My onc found them too & we both knew it was back. He called in a nurse, who took 2 needle biopsies. They didn't show any cancer fluid. My onc explained that she had probably inserted her needles into the "white", rather than the "yolk". So he sent me for an ultra-sound. An expert in the area couldn't find any evidence of cancer & called in an expert in a related area, who also couldn't find any evidence of cancer. Next, my onc sent me for a CT scan. Again, nothing was showing. But my onc & myself both knew the bugger had returned. Finally, he sent me for a PET scan - THAT finally showed it. My Ca125 was only 19 (showing that Ca125's aren't always reliable). If you can, request a PET scan, rather than a CT.

During all this waiting to prove its return, the damn cancer had travelled to my left breast.

So anyway, I was back on the chemo - carbo/caelyx plus I was lucky enough to get onto an avastin trial. The chemo put me straight back into remission (tho' the side-effects were tough) & the wonderful avastin kept me there for 5.5 years.

Now regarding lymph nodes : Initially, the surgeon told me he would probably remove my groin lymph nodes. He didn't. It's debatable I know, but lack of those groin lymph nodes can, I'm certain, cause "elephant leg". I have a friend from our OC support group suffering from this (altho the cause in unknown as she didn't have lymph nodes removed). That's something you can do a bit of research on. Best wishes. Pauline.
