Bloating after surgery

From your experiences were you still bloated 4 weeks after de bulking surgery? If so, how long?

Absolutely, I'm 6 weeks post debulking and I'm still bloated.. guess it's everything settling down ? I also have an ileostomy so this is causing me a few additional problems.. Have you a post surgery check up? You could mention it then, but do believe it's pretty normal..

Hi Jackie, I am 5 weeks post surgery and have a very unexpected iliostomy. It is very uncomfortable and sometimes painful and I have no confidence to leave the house. Do you have any suggestions? I have looked up support belts but the nurse says they will be uncomfortable.

Hi Neona, if you have no major problems with the iliostomy at home you wont outside either. Just try and start going out when you can, stay near a loo and you should be okay. Wear comfy clothes which you can get away with at this time of year. I would imagine fully briefs would be helpful rather than the other types.

Yes, still bloated for many weeks. Had colostomy which took awhile for bowels to adjust. Completed chemo, had colostomy reversed and no more bloating. Currently NED.

I've been ok thank you, feeling nervous about my op on Monday! Pre op tomorrow and visiting the hospital where it will be.

How long were you in? Did you go into critical care? Xx

I was in the hospital for 6 nights. No, thankfully I didn't go into critical care. They kept me longer to monitor my bowls because I threw up two days after. If you have any questions let me know. You will do great! It's tough but stay strong! I will be praying and thinking if you Monday!

Good morning! Yes, I was very bloated for almost 12 weeks. Partially due to an ileus I developed after surgery that took a long time to correct itself. And then they discovered ascites (fluid building in my abdomen).

I did find some relief with the support belts for the bloating early on. I found the relief it gave me outweighed the discomfort of the belt. The GynOnc just kept reminding me it was major surgery and can take a long time to settle down.

Yes - for a large number of weeks. Laxido my preferred laxative causes bloating, so a balance between constipation and bloating! My bowel was intact after surgery and some 6 months on I still have on/off intestinal pain colic etc. Consultant says big surgery, bowel is handled, moved around and put back. Bound to be some problems.

Hi Neona,

It's a bit of a nightmare isn't it with the ileostomy! My output is largely liquid and I'm very nervous about leakage when I'm out and about, to be honest I've only just ventured out in the past week and only local Walks where I can quickly reach home very speedily!

I am suffering with aches and pains too, the on oncologist said that it was to be expected after such major surgery..

To add insult to injury, I have 2 more chemos to complete treatment which judging by the last one, really played havoc with the pain of my stoma..

oh the joys!! I'm hoping we can look back and remember all of this as some type of learning curb? Probably never take your bowels for granted!!!!

My tummy took a while to settle post surgery, remember your whole digestive system was moved around and washed out so you are bound to feel uncomfy, look for a recommended laxative if you need it. Maybe get up and move around the house every hour to keep your muscles working and that also helps the tummy ones too.
