Hi Tinams - I hope you're recovering well from your surgery. I think it's pretty standard practice to send almost anything they remove from folk during surgery to pathology for testing, just to be sure. Although I'm sure your cyst is completely normal and benign, it is better they check.

I had a large 16cm 'cyst' removed back in June - was told it was nothing other than a normal 'cyst' but once the pathology came back, it was a 'Borderline Ovarian Tumour' and I had to have further surgery. Had they not sent it for testing, we wouldn't have known and the outcome could have been very different. I'm telling you this not to worry you, but to reassure you that what your medical team are doing is perfectly normal.

I hope you continue to recover well from your recent surgery and the results come back as they expect, which I'm sure they will.

I'm doing good thanks...i'd say fully recovered from the surgery and getting my life back, which has been wonderful. Of course, there's always the worry of these things returning, but I think almost everyone on here has the same fears. You just deal with it. Fingers crossed for your pathology report - i'm sure there is nothing to worry about x

Hi Mrs_Atko , out of curiousity how long did it take until you found out the results from your cyst removal? I had a 12cm cyst removed (as well as full hysterectomy) on October 18th. I've been given a follow up appointment for early December, but wondered how long you waited for the pathology report.

Many thanks

Hi Lorna,

I found out about 2 weeks after first op. Second op was to remove ovary, tube & appendix & have abdominal 'washings' for staging...

I'm guessing your follow-up is your normal post-op check? I'm sure if something unusual had cropped up they would let you know sooner.

If you're worried I'd contact your surgical team...hope you're recovering well Hun xx

Thanks! I guess no news is good news. It's 2 weeks since my op tomorrow so presumably the longer I don't hear than it's for the better!!

The frozen section done on my mass showed nothing however the full Pathology report showed clear cell ovarian cell in the mass and in my abdominal fluid. You will have to wait for the full report to be certain.

Did they do a frozen section too?

Take care

Yes..she was going off first look..should i still be worried or is that a definite no to cancer

in reply to Tinams

Well if your doctor felt it was a definite no, she wouldnt committ I do feel they know what to look for in benign and malignant so have a fair idea during surgery. The thing you can do for now is to care for yourself and that means no worrying, no heavy lifting etc and take a rest everyday. Best of luck with your check up apt

Hi there

Sorry that you are in this situation and I do hope that your recovery is going as well as these things so.

My understanding is that an experienced surgeon will have a good idea as to whether a tumor she has removed looks benign or not. Frozen sections will also aid them . If both ..ie the macroscopic appearance and the frozen section are saying benign then there is a high probability that your mass is benign. However to be certain and because this is the gold standard test, cysts are also checked by a pathologist.

I know that it's easy to say this , but try to concentrate on your recovery and not worry too much about this. Nobody will know with 100 per cent certainty until the pathologist reports , but from what you are saying it is looking positive. It is obvious that you have had a rough time and the hormonal and after effects of surgery and anaesthetics take a long time to get over.

Take care and let us know how you get on xxx

Im not so sure its benign they said my thyroid was nothing it was everything..and i feel bad all the time and my left ovary cyst they didnt touch it was to twisted into my other organs as this one was too..so i don't feel so good with the dr coming to tell me uts benign without 100% knowing i had thyroid cancer and i had to call them so forgive me for not hqving faith in the medical field expecially here in florida the worst medical i ever seen

Given your previous experience, I can completely understand why you are worried. Having said that, try and save your mental (and physical) strength because until you know for sure, you'll be making yourself sick with worry, when things 'may' be completely different this time.

I'm sorry to hear that you've experienced thyroid cancer and hopefully that is all now behind you now. Maybe calling your medical team and chasing the report will make you feel like you're doing something constructive whilst you wait. I'm sure the Pathology team are being as thorough as possible to ensure they don't miss anything and sometimes, that can take time. Try and stay positive x
