Flu jab & Chemo

Hi Ladies,

I was just wondering if any of you had the flu jab whilst on Chemo, I've just had my fourth cycle of six. My GP has advised me to have it and my Oncologist said it would be OK, but I was a bit worried because I know some people have a reaction to it and I've never had a flu jab before.

Any advice please.

I had a flu jab due to unrelated chest problems every year until last year when I was on chemo. I have never had any side effects apart from a sore arm and it kept me flu free. I missed last year because I was unwell and managed to catch a horrible dose of flu which hung around for months. This year I will running to my GP surgery for my jabx

I had one before starting my chemo and I was very weak at the time. I survived! GP and onc advised I had it.

Hi Helen, my oncologist always insists on flu jab whether on chemo or between chemos! I'll be getting it soon again.

That's a tough decision as our immunities are so screwed with the chemo. I have 2 weeks to go before finishing and am living like a hermit to avoid all exposure to bugs. I am ocd on hand sanitazers etc. Personally I am going to wait till my white count normalises after chemo but there is a price to pay for that. (Not going out) . I would only get the flu jab if I was totally free of any bugs.but I do plan to get it this year. Good luck with your decision

HI Helen I think the best time during a chemo to get the jab is a few days after you start feeling better after the round so perhaps anytime after day 13 or 14 and then you will be in form for your next treatment. You shouldnt have it less than ten days post chemo treatment. There are no side effects. I must organise mine in the next few weeks, it has stopped me getting heavy colds or flu in the past

I was told by my oncologist to have it just after my chemo which was Friday because they know my bloods are OK? I thought as you do that it would be better to wait until just before my next cycle, I'm not sure what to do now!

I've had it during chemo and there was no mention of a better or worst time to do it!

Speak to your oncologist or cns, they and you, will know when it is best for YOU.

Hi Helen, I have just had my flu jab yesterday. I asked my team if it was OK and as long as my blood results were OK I was fine to have it. I am on weekly taxol. Hope this helps. Xx

Hi Helen

Thanks for reminding me to check with my oncologist about flu vaccine . I get it before every winter and I guess it must be doubly important if you are on chemo, which I am until Christmas . I have never had a bad reaction to it. Take care .
